Speedometer & odometer not working after o2 sensor was checked
So my girlfriends brother had a check engine light come on, and went to the store to have the code read. It said that it was the bank 1 o2 sensor was not getting a signal. Due to the part is over 200 dollars he decided to make sure the sensor was bad by checking everything with a multi meter. After checking the o2 sensor connections he got it his car and noticed that the speedometer, odometer, and the battery light is on. Any ideas what happened? How could reading the code, or checking the o2 sensors signals effect these components?

My first thought is he checked for continuity or resistance on a live circuit. First thing to do is check fuses.

HE Shorted something out, Check the alternator fuse under the dash, and unplug the o2 sensor, replace the fuse, then start the car, make sure the tach and speedo works, then plug in that o2 sensor, if the fuse pops and the tach dies, you have a short on that sensor.

Thanks guys. We got it all under control now. It was the fuse for the alternator. The sensor was plugged back in and it did not blow it, so it must of been operator error. I appreciate the help.

Re: Speedometer & odometer not working after o2 sensor was checked
After the Cadillac converter went out on my 99 Honda Civic I replaced it with a straight pipe and the oxygen sensor I cut off now I have problems with the odometer and speedometer and some system question should I have left the oxygen sensor connected to the wires but not connected to the straight pipe will that correct the problem if so is there a solution to not using the oxygen sensor
