Power lock won’t engage w/door open
Hello community!
I have an 03 EX 4door.
Driver side door won’t fully engage power lock when I push the lock lever if the door is open. It sounds and feels as if it has low power, like not enough to fully engage the solenoid.
When the door is closed and I hit the lock lever, then the lock will go all the way down and sounds/feels like it has full power to the locking mechanism.
Also, I can’t always use the key to lock/unlock from the outside because the key won’t always engage in the cylinder. It engages 1 out of every 10 tries or so. What are my options there?

For the outside door lock, the key is likely worn down from old age. You can take your registration/title and driver's license to a Honda dealer and they can cut a fresh key from the VIN for you. You might wanna live with it though because new OEM ignition keys for this generation are well over 100 bucks.

Yeah, all 7th gen civics are weird like that. Open the driver side door, pull the handle and hold it, press down on the manual door lock (all other doors should lock automatically), then close your door.

I've only had 7th gen civics, but all hondas are like that? You can't lock the door, manually or electronically, when it's open without pulling the door handle?

It is a safety feature that reduces the chances of a driver accidentally locking their keys in the car. This feature has been standard on all Honda's since 1992 for sure... some models even earlier.
