Default New to honda tech and cars! Questions

So I'm teaching myself all there is to know about cars, motors, etc. I recently bought an 05 civic dx 1.7l inline 4. First question would be what is vtec and would it be possible to turn my engine into vtec or would I have to do a swap? I'm trying to avoid a swap so if that's the case what would be the most basic, inexpensive things I can do to my car to add a little get up and go to it? I would also like to take it to the strip on the weekends while keeping it my daily driver of course, so nothing too insane. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions for me since I'm just getting started and still have a lot to learn? Thanks!

First VTEC is Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. If your vehicle is not equipped with one it will be hard for you to make the VTEC work as you will swap the complete head, Computer etc which will add more burden on your pocket. If you are going to use is as daily driver I would recommend just leave it as is and even if you somehow manage to make the vtec work you won't find a huge difference as far as power is concern. Since you are on budget. If you wanna make a swap for power than K20 swap will be recommended which again will cost you a lot of $$$. Hope this help.
