Default Need your help - 2005 Civic 30k Maintenance

My 2005 Civic is about to reach 30,000mi and in the manual it says I need to...

1. Replace oil and filter (I can do this no problem)
2. Check front and rear brakes (front brakes I can check, but not sure about rear)
3. Lubricate all hinges, locks and latches (I think I can manage this - what type of lube do I use?)
4. Inspect the following items:
a. Tie-rod ends, steering gearbox, and boots (What signs of wear do I look for?)
b. Suspension components, Driveshaft boots (What signs of wear do I look for?)
5. Inspect and adjust drive belts (I believe just make sure there aren't any cracks right?)
6. Replace dust and pollen filter (I can do this)
7. Replace air cleaner element (what is this?)

I would like to try to do most of this myself and avoid taking it to my Honda dealer. Some of the items and I not sure what signs of wear I need to look for. If you have any experience performing these maintenance task I would greatly appreciate your advise.

Thanks in advance!

1. Do it yourself, change the oil too.
2. The rears are easily adjusted, if you have to pull the handle up alot to engage the brake, they need adjusting.
3. A regular white silicone or lithium grease will suffice.
4a. Inspect for ripped boots, leaks, free play in the outer tie rod ends, PS fluid leaking at the hose inlets at the rack and at the pump.
4b. There again, ripped boots, leaking grease from the axle itself.
5. No cracks, missing cogs, excessive free play or you are able to twist the belt more than a half inch or so.
6. They are located behind the glovebox. On the inside of the glovebox, are 2 tabs, push them together, and the GB will fall to the floor. There are 2 filters, one directly behind the glovebox, and one to the right of the glovebox compartment if I recall correctly.
7. The air cleaner element is just the engine air filter.

To remove the rear drum, smack the outer edge of the drum as you spin the drum with your other hand. The drum will loosen and pop off. Use a 8" prybar or screwdriver along with the hammer as necessary to get it to fully come off.

Hose the everything in the rear and outer drum housing down with brake parts cleaner over a trash can.

Pry the brake shoes away from the rear drum housing and lube the spots where it contacts the rear drum housing with a quick shot of white lithium grease. Wipe off any grease that gets on the brake lining.

Measure the brake shoe lining with a caliper or with a go-no go feeler gauge. I believe 6mm is the new specification.

Adjust the preload of the piston by turning the ratcheting gear found on the upper side of the rear drum housing. If you ratchet it tighter, it'll increase the preload. Turn it a tooth or two and put the drum back on. Spin it. If it can glide easily with just a little bit of drag on the brake shoe lining, then it's good. Increase the preload as necessary to get that effect. Back it off if you've gone too far.

That's a 15k mile rear drum brake service.

A front brake job involves lubing the caliper pins with high-temp grease and measuring the brake pad lining left. That's done every 7.5k miles.

Total service time, roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on how many times you have to scratch your head.

I was able to do most of the maintenance on my car this evening. When I was about to change my oil I noticed a lot of oil on the outside of the oil pan and around the plug. I think it might be the washer since I have not changed it on the previous oil changes. I am not sure if my local autozone will have it or if I can use any replacement washer. Everything else under the car looked fine, I still need to inspect my brakes this weekend. I do not have any experience on drum brakes only on disc brakes so the response from IN VTEC will really help me out. Thanks everyone for your help. Anyone have any idea what Honda would have charged for this maintenace? I didn't spend much on the parts except for the dust filter which was like $25.

Honda tried to charge me almost 200 bucks for my 20,000 mile inspection.

Craziness.

It's probably around $300 for the 15k mile service. I know the 7.5k mile service is around $120 (oil change, tire rotation, front brake service, and injector cleaner). A 15k service tacks on a 4-whl alignment and the rear brake service.

Hi, I'm new to honda-tech.com.

Anyways, where did you buy the dust and pollen filter? Did you buy OEM?

You should get a CRX Honda Man. You would love it.

A noise isn't exactly specific. What does it sound like?
