an update on my part, since its seems to brainstorming us all.

-we checked our timing belt just incase as i posted before, there was no discrepency there, cam and crank sensors were good.

-we did the cluster built-in-test and all gages sweep normal. we have both ecu's and both will show the same symptoms.

-still no connections through the obd port.

-have checked all grounds-no problems found

-have changed main relays, no fix, although sometimes u will start the car and the tach and coolant gage work normal for about 5 seconds, then it cuts one of the 2 pgmfi relays. Im searching the wiring diagram now as to why one relay is being denergized. as soon as it clicks offline, the tsch and coolant temp goes out, runs rough, is in limp ect. maby ign switches or immobilizer unit? hmmmmm

if the immobilizer unit is swapped, do the keys need reprogram again?

anyone seen any of a problem with the ign switches? my friend at honda said he had heard of this problem before, but never actually seen it, and supposedly the fix was the ign switches......

Here is a report of an 01-05 Civic that skipped a timing belt tooth and ran but poorly: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-2001-2005-78/complete-loss-power-2831212/

Im having the exact same problem with my 01 civic ex.. RPM gauge not working temp gauge not working, Stuck in limp mode, ECU will not connect to odb,Immobilizer light flashing.. I actually had this problem about 2 years ago and took it to the dealer and they replaced the multiplex unit and ECU, It fixed the problem somewhat but still could not get the ECU to connect to an odb and could not get it legally smoged cause it would not connect to the smog computer.. Well now 2 years later THE SAME PROBLEM! stuck in limp mode ect ect.. waiting to have another ECU installed this week so frustrating to say the least!! Any news on what the fix is? Dealer just recommend buying a new car.. haha

bumpin' up!

I'm having the same problem on a customer's car. It seems everyone is changing out the parts that would potentially cause the problem. But without actually solving the problem.

So has anyone actually fixed their car in this thread?

I am a 2001 honda civic owner and this thing happen to me couple of years back I agree with "It wasn't Me" that your civic is in Limp Mode and 7th generation civics have this catagory to protect engine and transmission from any kind of damage when it happen to me car has no power at all since I drive automatic the shifting was very funky when you'll release the gas pedal that where it would shift I took it to the dealership the the tech told that my car was in Safe Mode (same as Limp Mode) the reset the ECU and my car was fine. The only difference was that my car check engine light was on. I found out later that some time weak batteries can cause this. So here a little from me. Hope it helps.

Forgot to come back and update. Replaced ecu and reflashed for immobilizer.

Alternator was not grounding good through the housing. The alternator housing was corroded from age and salt. The bolts holding the alternator weren't all that tight. Which plays a major roll in it.

Sanded housing and bracket, did the same on all engine grounds. Car is fine now and delivered. So if anyone has any of these problems, look at the alternator and ecu being fried from the alternator.

He may have forgotten to connect a sensor (CKP or CMP maybe?) or perhaps even fried your ECU. I'll dig around a bit.
probably the crank position sensor
