Cheap D17A1 NA build

Hello. I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX with about 79k miles on it. The engine recently went, and I want to replace it with another d17a1 or maybe a d17a2. I would like to go with a d17a1 with a few extra parts to make the car a little more fun to drive, but it still needs to be reliable. I will not be doing any of this work myself, and the car will be daily driven. I am thinking maybe a flywheel, clutch kit, ingalls stiffy damper. Any suggestions guys? I don't want to spend too much, as I am probably also going to put in a new transmission. I can not find a cam anywhere for the d17a1. I am basically looking to get around 135-140 horsepower without doing a whole lot of reworking. Maybe some high compression pistons??

Thanks. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Also it isn't worth swapping a a2 into your car.. you'll spend 1500 for 10-15whp. Just do i/h/e til u know what direction you want to go. But for most EM2 drivers.. they've said a suspension was their best investment so you should start there https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

good luck hitting 135-140whp NA. Its not going to be cheap by any way, shape, or form. They also do make a NA stage II cam for the d17 but i believe its for an A2. Youd definitely would need kpro, stage 2 cams, springs, and retainers, high comp pistons, full exhaust with no cat, header, intake, injectors, gauges(to monitor your car to see if youve blown a HG), and a new IM. All that would cost you about the same for a boost setup.

Running higher compression pistons with a nice cam and K-pro, might yield the results you are looking for.

I think it'd be cool to see an NA D17 build. Expensive, but interesting.

Alright guys thanks for all the input. I think I might just go I/H/E for now, I plan on getting a gen4 prelude for a project. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: Cheap D17A1 NA build (D17alltheway)

D17alltheway, why would an a2 cost me 1500? I can get a D17A1 engine for about $400, and a D17A2 for about $450, and as far as I know all I need to change over for the a2 is the headers and I would need a VAFC2 or similar to control the vtec. Am I mistaken here?? Thanks.

in the faq theres a diy head swap from an a1 to an a2 (even though your just swapping the whole engine), and it lists all the things you need for the conversion.
