Automatic tranny question

I've been doing some reading and asking. But.. is it even worth it spending money on headers, cold air intake, and exhaust items on an automatic tranny? I mean probably all combined you'd get a small step ahead But I don't think there much you can do to improve on an automatic tranny. ( mine being an 03 civic EX) Can it be done? or should I just not even bother.

it can be done, don't bother unless you want it for looks and sound, becasue there are no gains from it

-.- yea thats what I thought. but what about a performance chip? That would most likely help right? Or is there repercussions to that.

Don't bother imho

I agree with luke don't bother. You are going to see very minimal gains at best from bolt on parts. The only way you would really see gains is if you boosted it but seeing as how you have an auto-magic tranny I wouldn't even do that.

Re: Automatic tranny question

.. could have just read the FAQs..

Q: What can I do to make my engine perform better?

- A: Unfortunately, the D17 does not respond well to standard bolt-ons or natural aspiration build-ups. Even with higher compression pistons, a high-performance cam, custom intake manifold and throttle body, cold air intake, aftermarket header and exhaust, and head work, you may only see 20 to 30 whp (which really isn't worth the thousands you would invest in the project). Your three "best" options are a Nitrous kit (only up to 60hp shot on stock internals), a turbo-setup, or swapping for a K-series engine.

That means..

Thanks, and sorry I'm not used to seeing the FAQ's having useful information, so thats why I didn't even check it.

And for my 3 best options. I'd say turbo is my best bet cause I think nitrous is illegal in my state, not sure though. 2ndly I don't think I can affor a k20 swap, do they even make K20's in auto tranny's?

But for turbo, wouldn't it mess up my engine, my auto tranny with 112K miles on it?

Yep.

I'd say it's a bit late in life for doing anything to it.

A decent build is likely more than you're willing to spend. This isn't a nickel-and-dime hobby. I think people get the wrong impression when it comes to how much it costs to build things the right way.

I'd check the laws about nitrous. It's fun and doesn't hurt the wallet much.

from a financial standpoint, k-swap isn't really worth it unless you can get the parts cheap + do the labour yourself (and don't expect to get your money back if you sell the car). not sure what the price of a k-swap is nowadays but it used to be $10k+. w/ that amount of money, i ended up buying a used s2000 + kept my civic for winter use. imo, a stock s2000 is way more fun.

I see thanks for the advice. I will check that out. I know some nitrous kits don't even go past 1k, so I hopefully it's an option.

I know right:| for 10k I could just look into buying an rsx or something. My car is kind of jacked up anyway. My doors flop open at the pull of the door level, I snapped the clips in an attempt to install new speakers. (civic stock speakers are total garbage) And yea, I broke both the clips on both doors........ It's embarrassing.

rsx really isn't much of an upgrade over the 7th gen. the base is still slow and handles poorly like the civic.

as for the problems, sounds like you need new door checkers ($12 from majestic honda). clips are a few bucks. imo, just fix the little problems...

Hmmmm I had a similar question as you did but i did see results from haveing some head work done, dc headers, injen intake, hks exhaust. I had it dynoed and saw a little over 30 whp to the wheels. and i spent maybe around 550 bucks. But i wanted to look into a tuner or a performance chip, but i cant find nothing for the d17. i heard hondata has it all on lock down. is that true is there a aftermarket performance chip you can buy on the net.

All that for only $550? Hmmm...

They're junk, anyway. Consider like a pile of dog crap. Just because it's there doesn't mean you should pick it up.

As good as it gets.
