001 civic speedo, odometer, gas gauge only works sometimes
Hello all,
We have a 2001 Civic with 45k miles on it.
The gauge cluster suddenly quits working- sometimes the entire cluster (all gauges) will go out and the brake light comes on.
We can turn off the engine, turn on and off the lights and restart the vehicle and the gauges (some of them- usually the speedo,tach, and temp) all come back on. The odometer usually doesn't work, or works least of the time.
The gas gauge isn't accurate except when above half, it shows when you add gas.
Also, the D flickers when the gauge is messed up.
We have done the diagnostic and the cluster checks out and we have looked at the fuses(both boxes) but I haven't pulled every fuse.
I have read of a grounding issue but I am at a loss, also the transmission sensor is a suspect, but I am looking for help!
I have seen variations of this on several Honda forums so I know it isn't isolated.
Any thoughts, ideas, are definitely appreciated.

Hmm.. sounds like it could be the MCU (multiplex control unit) on the fritz.
Why do you think the "transmission sensor" is a suspect? Because the Drive light flickers when the gauge cluster is going bonkers? If it were a bad sensor you'd likely be throwing a code. Have you scanned the ECU for any codes?
Are any other electrical components acting up? Headlights, taillights, dash lights, radio or heater intermittently keeps cutting out.... .. .anything?
Does the car run bad or stall when this is all happening, or is the cluster the only thing effected?

Car runs fine, has never thrown a code.
I have seen references to either the gauge cluster or the tranny sensor as suspects when the speedo is having issues and since the gauge cluster went through the diagnostic with no problem, I looked at the sensor. It's the only thing I saw refernced with these symptoms.
Lights are fine, electrical is fine; when it works it works fine. Speedo is usually good and temp is good, just the odometer almost never works and the gas gauge is usually a no show.
I hadn't thought of scanning the ECU since I hadn't seen a cel, but I will do that.
I am looking for the MCU on various sites and parts houses, is it called something else?
