2002 Honda Civic - Emisson Light Question
My emission light came on the other day. I noticed it yesterday morning when I drove to work. It was still on when I drove back to work and today it was still on on my way to work. Trip to/from work is 20 miles one way. According to the manual, if it was a gas cap issue it should've been turned off by now.
Two days ago I got gas on my way home from work. I dropped my gas cap on my foot and it rolled under my car. I didn't want to crawl under my car to get it so I drove ahead, put the car in park, and then retrieved my gas cap. So I drove the car about 10 feet with no gas cap on and the gas door open before putting the cap on. I was in a hurry because there was a car behind me wanting to pull into the pump I was at; so it's possible the cap wasn't on very tightly.
I plan on getting codes read from Autozone or a place like that. Seems like too much of a coincidence to be a more serious problem like a sensor or something else.
Could starting the car and driving it ever so slightly with no gas cap trigger the emission light? Why hasn't it gone off by now? Can I reset the code/lights somehow to see if there is still an issue that would trigger the emission light?
Thank You.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic - Emisson Light Question
Not having a proper seal in the fuel system may trigger the CEL, yes.
You can reset the light yourself. Simply remove fuse #6 from the fuse box located in the engine compartment. Wait 30 seconds and reinstall it.
After you reset the ECU, you should do the Idle Learn Procedure. It's easy. With everything electrical turned off (a/c, radio, lights, wipers, everything) - start the car and hold it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fan comes on, then let the car idle for at least five minutes. This establishes idle characteristics in the ECU.
If the CEL comes back on, have the car scanned and post the code(s) here.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic - Emisson Light Question
Hi,
I have a 2007 Civic Sedan. The MIL came on for the first time yesterday and I drove about 20 miles after that. It went after showing up a couple of times and has not come back since. I have made a few short trips so had to start and stop the car several times and it showed up for first few times only and then disappeared. I am planning for a trip this weekend (~200 miles total), can I make that trip and should I wait for the light to come back to take the car to a shop or as the manual suggests, some serious damage can happen and I should take it to a shop right away?
Thanks,
Krishna

Re: 2002 Honda Civic - Emisson Light Question
I have a 2004 Civic- my emissions light came on. The codes I got were P0420 and P2646. I had the catayltic converter and oil pressure switch replaced which should have solved the problem. But, now if hit 4000 RPM the car sputters and I have to let off of the gas and I am getting a code P2647 Rocker Arm Actuator. The oil switch was a Honda part.... Now what? If I change the solenoid valve will that help? BTW- I am not a car person- but am good at doing research online.
