Default 2005 Civic Fuel Pump Broken? Stranded Memorial Day Weekend

My 2005 Honda Civic is currently unresponsive, stuck 175 miles away at Aunt Betty's Towing Service in Sweet Springs Missouri. It just stopped on the highway.

The gentleman who towed my car to his garage told me it has to be the fuel pump. It only has 75,000 miles on it.

Here is what happened prior to the car stopping:

I filled up with gas...putting in 13.65 gallons for the first time ever. I usually don't let it get below 1/8 a tank.

After filling it up, the gauge remained at almost empty with the fuel light on.

I ran next door to a garage and they told me the "floater" was probably stuck since it got so low on fuel. He added it was completely safe to drive, and once I hit a bump, it would probably knock the floater off the bottom and back up to where it should be.

100 miles or so later on the highway, the car suddenly felt like it was not getting gas when I pressed the pedal, so I immediately pulled over to the shoulder and turned off the car. Tried to start it again and while it turned over, it would not start.

Once Steven from Aunt Betty's Towing service arrived, he took a look under the hood and guessed fuel pump. He sprayed something on under the hood, got the car going for a few seconds, then it died again.

He said he was almost positive it was the fuel pump and told me it would be around $649 with parts and labor---once he got the part after the Memorial day holiday.

I called Don Wessel Honda in Springfield and spoke to a non-mechanic, (they are closed). He told me it was probably just the fuel filter because of sediment at the bottom of my gas tank.

After relaying this to Steven, he told me that the fuel pump and the fuel filter were connected, so he would have to replace it all.

This is after just looking under the hood. Tomorrow (Monday) he is going to look at it further and let me know what he finds.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? Does it sound like Betty's towing knows what they are doing? The closest Honda dealership is 70 miles away and he was going to charge me $350 to tow it there....

Any advice one could give me would be greatly appreciated, as I will not be able to reach anyone at Honda until Tuesday......Trying to make some decisions here.

Kind regards,
Julie

$649 for a fuel pump and labor? what a rip. a new one from honda online is between $168 & $205

look under fuel tank if it isnt going.

Or you can pick up a walbro 255 for less than 100 shipped from eBay. Fuel pump aint hard to change either.

Yeah that price is extremely high. I'd have a 3rd party tow it out of the yard and into a reputable dealership.

That s&%* sounds shady. Defiantly take it to the stealer ship. Also get in you car and turn off any thing that makes noise make sure its really quite and turn the key to the on position the one right before you start it you should be able to hear the fuel pump prime the system. If you don't hear it the your fuel pump is dead.
