Frame-Off Restoration Project: 1965 Honda S600 Roadster.
Pictures on Pages: 1 (obviously ); 2 (engine pictures); 4 (dissasembly); 6-7 (even more dissasembled, and pics of parts); 9 (almost ready for body to be removed from frame) 14 (parts car, and some body work done) more to come.....
........
Welcome to my new project, a 1965 Honda S600 Roadster. This year, this car turned 40 years old, so what's a better 40th birthday present for this car than a frame off restoration?
I recently picked this car up from a Honda enthusiast/collector in Hendersonville TN, near Nashville. The guy had two garages full of these cars, totaling more than 20 or so old Honda S's (a combination of S600's, and S800's coupes and roadsters).
So after a 10 hour road-trip from Pittsburgh PA, to TN, and 10 hours back, here is my S600.
Hopefully this will turn out to be a "time-line" type thread taking you through the entire restoration project.
Here she is, loaded up on the trailer, ready to begin the journey to her new home:
Below, notice how she just barely fits on the uhaul trailer
I didn't get any intransit shots, or any of us unloading her, but here she is in her spot in my driveway.
The driver side rear quarter is the only section on the car that will need special attention. It was obviously hit here before, and somebody did a poor bondo job here. The rest of the car is rock solid, and just has very minor surface rust.
Then my girlfriend and I started to disassemble the interior. These cars are known to have the floor pans rust out, but the ones on this car are rock solid.
That sound deadening material was so shot, it would just disintegrate when you'd try to remove it.
Then we removed some of the exterior components:
And a couple engine bay shots. The motor is still in the back of my Pathfinder, in several boxes. I will take some pictures of it later on. It's an amazingly small, 606cc DOHC 4 cylinder.
That's it for now, I'll post more pics/info as progress is made.

Thanks,
And believe me, discussions of an F20C have already been made if the original motor is unable to be rebuilt.

haha now that you've said that i say screw the original motor and go with an f20........it'll only be like a million times harder, plusa hell of a lot of custom fabbing.
either way when thats done thats gonna be one slick little convertable

Hendersonville has the Floyd Garret Museum right? That town must be a haven for restorable cars. I also vote for a F20 swap. I like the old school steering wheel. for a cool restoration..Good luck!

Well, I'm going to give the original motor a chance, and if rebuilding it becomes to much of a nightmare parts wise (I mean, you can't just walk into the Honda dealer, and ask for a OEM headgasket over the counter), then plans for a swap will be made.

Thanks, yes, the S type Honda's were the first "cars" made by Honda.

It looks like you and everyone so far wants to see an F20C in this car, I don't know if it will even fit .
There was a Lane Motor Museum there, and I visited that (tons of early europeans, and other rare cars). I have tons of pics from it, I should make a separete thread just on those .

We used plastic baggies for different bolts and what not to keep everything organized. A B series would not work, this car is Rear Wheel Drive.

Well, the guy I bought mine from has about 20 of them, ranging from similar condition to mine, to mint unrestored original condition. He told me that he will be listing at least half of them on ebay in the near future, or just putting the word out that they are for sale.
If anyone is seriously interesting in purchasing an old Honda S, PM me, and I can get you intouch with the guy I bought mine from.

keep the original motor. f20 is cool, but OG is cooler. Besides, the f20 trans probably wouldnt even fit in the tunnel

I would really like to keep the original motor, but it's completely disassembled right now, and it's going to be difficult to rebuild. No company that I know of sells gaskets, bearings, piston's, valves, or any other part that I might need while rebuilding it. And Honda discontinued parts for these cars many many years ago. I suppose that stuff could be custom machined, but if it's too much of a hassle to rebuild, I may consider doing something crazy like a F20 swap, and if the tunnel is to small, make it bigger .
