93 Milano Red Si restoration/build

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
decided a different route for this rebuild. I decided to swap in a set of used Y8 pistons along with the Y8 head. swapped out the 14psi actuator for a 7psi actuator. hoping to make 220 whp.

TB, oil lines, water lines, filter, and down pipe are all on.
i need to square away the valves lashing, the dizzy, engine mounts, and EMS still.
i still have a ways to go before this thing is running.

engine and tranny are in. clutch lines, throttle cable, shifter rods, fuel rail and return are all connected. still need to connect the engine harness, intercooler system, cooling system, amongst a few other things.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
This helped fuel many achievements this warm weekend:
Got the engine harness squared away, valve lashing adjusted, cranked the engine to prime the oil system without plugs to avoid creating compression.
The engine spun effortlessly.

Lol. Haven't gotten much done since the holidays.
It's been rather cold.
Hoping to mod my Downpipe to no longer interfere with my rad this weekend.
I'm also hoping to get the coolant system hooked up as well as the water lines to and from the turbo.
I'll keep the thread updated once I have some sort of productivity on my end.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
It's been a while since I updated this thread. I was able to purchase a second hand s300, wire up my gauges, situate the coolant lines, installed dual slim fans, 4 bar map, IC, bumper, axles, energy suspension master kit, and lights.
Need to finish down pipe, install IC pipes, and tune.

Day time pic:
I was able to redo my exhaust and mount the IC pipes. I just have a few more loose ends to straighten out before I start tuning.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
finally got around to breaking in the rings and getting a cold start tune completed. once I got the car back, I dropped the oil and noticed it was shimmering with aluminum flake.
I refilled the engine with oil, removed the turbo oil feed line, removed the plugs, and crank to the engine to see if the oil pump was priming and pumping oil. sadly, it wasn't at the rate I expected.
I removed the filter from the turbo and tried spinning the comp wheel and the wheel was seized. so I remove the restrictor and a nice chunk of bearing is lodge in the restrictor.
to make matters worse, I removed the oil again, dropped the pan, removed the main cap/girdle and cyl 2 & 3 had bearing damage.
long story short, bearing failed due to poor crank design, bearing material blocked restrictor to clog and turbo go boom.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
so back to square one.
my neighbor is willing to give me a Y7 engine he has in his back yard to use for my rebuild.
after reading more about the shot Y crank design im on the fence of whether to turbo the next build or not. I do have two other garrets in the garage, but I do not want to sacrifice them to poor crank designs.
so I may go T3 GT30 Z6 crank in Y7 bottom end & block with Y8 head
or
mini-me Y7 bottom end with Y8 head and keep it NA.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
to add insult to injury I need to replace the heater core. I noticed a decent size pool of coolant on my the passenger floor.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
I still have ARP head studs (used 250 miles), VMS Adjustable cam gear (brand new), gates timing belt (brand new), cometic mls .051 head gasket (brand new), extra clearance main and rod bearings (brand new), cometic gasket set (brand new). I also have used greddy manifold, intercooler, 14B turbo; Y8 head, Y7 crank, Y5 block, SI trans and axles.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
Tore down the B16 over the weekend and all four pistons have cracked ring landings. Other than shot pistons the engine was mint for being close to 2 decades old.
I plan on replacing them with LS pistons which should yield 8.5x:1 CR.
I will post pics soon.

Re: 93 Milano Red Si restoration/build
Been a while since I posted anything about this car.
Still have it. HAvent done body work. Rot has not gotten worse.
Built the b16 to be a 11:1 turbo. Was loads of fun with e-85.
Sold that set up and now have a b20vtec with a built head tuned on Crome and gsr trans.
