VTC Actuator Rattle - 2008 Accord L4

Re: VTC Actuator Rattle - 2008 Accord L4
I received an email from someone claiming to be an attorney. He said he was trying to start a class action suit for this problem. My Accord had this repair done 3 times by the dealer (I had to pay for 3 valve adjustments). The rattle came back a fourth time and was not fixed. Has anyone else heard from this attorney?

I am just out of warranty and after taking it in a few years ago for the startup rattle, they now say that yes the VTC Actuator needs replacing but they want $800 to do it. What happens if I just ignore this?

Re: VTC Actuator Rattle - 2008 Accord L4
need help. finally got my dealer to look at this bulletin 09-010. This is after they changed the starter, and exhaust to fix this. I searched this on the internet and found the problem. They changed the VLC actuator, today, they said they test drove it and it was fine. I get in the car and the dash lights up like a xmas tree. Engine, VASA, brake lights all on. They put it on the scanner and say the new part is defective. It took them 7HRS to put this thing on, so I am pretty sure they screwed it up. could a honda tech tell me so i could tell them what they did wrong.
thanks

Heliguy, did you mean the VTC actuator? I'm not sure how the VTC actuator can cause the issues that you are having but it sounds like they screwed the pooch and got something wrong.
7 hours? The TSB says 2 hours flat rate. You might want to see if another dealer can take a look at your car.
I have been living with the rattle for a while but it is getting worse. I just ordered the VTC actuator and plan on replacing it in the next couple of weeks. I'll try to take some photos and post them.

found this video on utube this morning. Put out by american honda, and shows the common screwups by techs doing the VLC bulletin. Mostly timing issues. Sent it to my dealers service manager. He never heard that HOnda puts out these training videos. I should charge them for training. I fix aircraft for a living, makes me happy thesse guys are not fixing aircraft.

I got mine changed recently by the dealer for $400 and the instruction says the mechanic need to follow the directions in the repair manual. I Also suggest call Honda Customer service to report the issues because I keep hearing 2008 have the Actuator issue but when I called Honda they say they dont have any complaints. So recommend to call and report the issue by all having issues for honda to pay attention of this common issue.

For you guys not covered, at your next oil change take 2 quarts of oil out of the motor and fill it with 2 quarts of trans fluid. Let the car idle to hot and then drive it a couple miles (get the rpm up) bring it back home and change the oil.
I have done this for about a dozen people with this problem who were out of coverage and its worked with success a little over half of the time. A little something to try before dishing out the money for a new actuator and install.

My accord has been fixed by the dealer 2X already (I had to pay for valve adjustments both times). Now the rattle is back for the third time and the dealer is telling me that the timing chain is causing the problem this time. They said the repair is covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles, but they won't fix the rattle unless I pay for the timing chain to be done.

I like how no one has answered the original question, "If I don't have the VTC Actuator replaced, can it cause more damage?"
Can someone PLESE answer this because I would like to know it too.

Re: VTC Actuator Rattle - 2008 Accord L4
I had this fixed on my 2008 Accord as well my service agent said since I had low miles (but still past warranty) he could cover it under the $100 deductible warranty. Well I go pick up my car expecting to pay $100 and this other service agent that I get along with went ahead and changed my invoice to pay nothing. The guy who was going to charge me 100 seemed a bit ticked off at the end of it all. Wondering if I should just go to the guy that charged me $0 from now on.

No, it is not covered by Honda. I called the dealership to verify. A Technical Service Bulletin is Honda's way of acknowledging there is an issue and tells the dealership how to fix it under warranty. It is not a recall.
Now, can someone please answer the original question, "If I don't replace the VTC Actuator, can is cause damage and other problems?"
