Default Temp gauge goes way up, but car is not overheating

I have a 2004 Honda LX sedan and today, after about an hour of driving, and while I was sitting in traffic, the temp. gauge went way up. But the car was not overheating and the fans were coming on. This has never happened before. Any advice? Thanks.

Are you sure both fans are coming on? I had the same problem and one of the fans wasn't working. I replaced the fans. You can watch some YouTube videos like the one from Scotty Kilmer "How to fix an overheating car" to get some other ideas.

If it's really not overheating and you are 100% sure, it's probably the temp sensor. Although, in my old 2000 Acura TL when the sensor was bad the gauge would just read a quarter of the way up all of the time, even after I just started the car in the winter. But as stated, you need to confirm for sure that it's not overheating because it still might be.
