Re: Replacing the water pump
I had a tensioner shoot a wrench back at me a few times after my hand slipped off of it Bloody knuckles are a fashion statement.

Direct drop-in. I don't recommend any belt dressings.
Buy a Mitsuboshi or Bando brand belt - they are the best by a long shot. Gates is pretty good and Continental is okay. Goodyear and Dayco are some of the worst accessory belts I've used.

No Gatorbacks for me. I put one on the 92, and I could never get that thing tight enough to make it stop slipping, once or twice every morning.

Re: Replacing the water pump
Forever ago, I was replacing a belt on a 5.7L chevy and my tensioner tool slipped and hit me damn near in the temple. Knocked me smooth out.
What is true is that at many times technicans are in potentially hazardous situations. Working safely and not haphazardly should be a key concern for anyone working on a car. Not only should you have concern with your own safety while working, but also of others because of the work you are performing. Oops I forgot to tighten that caliper bolt could turn deadly just as easily as not woking under jack stands at ALL times and the jack seal failing.

did you guys use a manual when you guys started working?
I am a seasoned technician and rely on service manual information on a regular basis for information that makes the task I am performing possible. ANY technican can tell you of times in the beginning of their career when they were curled up with a service manual and an ETM and thats ALL they had to figure out what was wrong with a car. Understanding how something works is the first step in diagnosing a problem. If you don't know how a system works is it really possible to diagnose that system. That said buy a manual DLE and anyone working on their car. It is invaluable if you use it.
