Need a new key

Need a new key
Hello, I have an 04 honda accord and I'm having some issues with getting a new key. When I bought the car they only had one key and it wasn't a big issue. Well, recently my fob cracked and now it won't hold the actual key that goes into the ignition. I've gone to the honda dealership and they want $175 for a new key. To me that sounds ridiculous so I went online and found several sites selling keys and they say that you can program them yourself and then you just need to get the key cut. I would like to go this route to save some money if possible and just program the key myself. The issue that I'm seeing is that in my research I've read that you can program the new fob to the locks but not to actually start the car. I'm just curious if anyone that has done this before or has some knowledge about it could help me out? If possible, where to get the most reliable replacements and how to do this without breaking the bank. Sorry for the wall of text and thank you in advance.

Re: Need a new key
The only problem is that if you dont have a key that works, you cant program a new key. $175 is actually pretty good if its the key with all the buttons, not just the valet key. I had to replace one of the keys for my Camry a couple months ago and for the key with the buttons they wanted $300, so I just had them program me a basic, "valet" key that starts the car but doesnt have any of the buttons on it for $150.
Just be glad your car doesnt have smart keys because those are about $500 each.

Re: Need a new key
I would suggest shop arround, you may have a dealer that has a good deal. Also check with some key shops, I think ACE hardware does auto keys.
Good Luck!!!
