2011 EX-L Fuel Tank Problem
On came the check engine light. Took it to local Honda dealer and they couldn't find the reason so they had me come back for a "smoke test" where they pump smoke into the tank to find pressure leaks. They said it was from the hose on top of the tank, but they couldn't see it. I had time so I dropped tank and pressure tested things since that hose is glued to the tank and non replaceable. Cost for tank and hose - $1,500 with labor. Tank and hose and all lines are holding pressure so they were guessing. I cleared the light and a day later it came back on. Anyone have experience with the same issue?

Probably a P1456 which is a "Tank Side" Evaporative Emmissions Control System Fault. If it's not your gas cap being loose, which you have checked...right? lol Your definitely going in the right direction by pulling the tank and lines. I was at a dealership once where we had smoked the car's system and couldn't find the leak (it's hard to get it right without pressure) and it ended up being a mice nest on top of the fuel tank (Honda Fit) so looking there is good. Have you checked to see if the fuel tank vent hose is clear? Also there would likely be a seperate code for this but you might want to try checking the wiring and resistance of the fuel tank pressure switch. Your best bet is going to be finding service information, thats where its at haha, the honda dealer stuff is ideal but impossible to come by without a tech username and password, shopkey, alldata etc. will really help you out in troubleshooting a P1456, they can be seriously annoying.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I checked the cap and even replaced the original with another - a new one I bought from Honda - just in case the aftermarket wasn't up to spec. When I had the tank down I blew through the vent lines with the airhose at 15 psi and it is open. I had read that ants can plug it. I think you're getting warm with the comment about the control system. I'll go to AZ to check the code. Frustrating that "the trained mechanics" couldn't get closer to the problem and just wanted to throw money at it.
