Hello all,
I have a 2006 Accord LX SE which I bought used apprx a year ago. I found the stereo would do all the things described by other owners and it is frustrating. I haven't had any sound from mine in over 2 weeks! Does anyone know if the whole integrated units being sold on Ebay will continue to work or do they have the same issue after 6 months to a year? If I am going to do a stereo swap I want to do either a OEM for OEM swap or to do the double din and controls swap. Not simply adding another radio to the car. Have any of you fine folk done a reconditioned unit swap yet?

My 2004 Accord LX has the same radio problem! I agree with simply installing a new radio below the AC controls and re-use the existing speakers. With mine, even the clock can't keep time. I'm thinking of pulling the constant 12 volt line simply to kill the clock display and killing the illumination feed to kill the LCD backlight. What a lousy crappy Alpine design! Alpine should offer a free replacment or at least publish the repair steps and schematic--they know what's wrong!!!!

I just finished the radio addition using an Amazon dash kit costing $12 with cable harness adapter and a $35 walmart Boss radio shipped to my local store--total cost was under $50! I'll try to post an 'after' photo of the thread lets me.

Also, all newer radios have USB and SD slots to store and play saved MP3 music--I get over 10,000 songs on a SD chip! The Boss radio I picked also has bluetooth for phone with phone and music feeds (e.g.: Pandora) without the AUX audio cable. So, I added a constantly powered 12 volt outlet to charge my phone while listening to my tunes or phoning someone. I haven't messed with a CD since the radio conversion--and I love that!

We bought a low mileage salvaged 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid a couple of days ago, beautiful condition cosmetically, but we were beginning to think we had gremlins in the electrical. Radio shuts off randomly, no external influence, no pattern to it. It holds the presets so I don't think it's the regular battery. You have to re enter the code to get it to play. After reading all of the comments in this thread I think we will purchase an OEM unit from a dealer on Ebay for $350 and try replacing the entire unit before going the retrofit route (although what you did with the car kit looks pretty decent, we'd like to keep the space to store junk) Also, one of the door locks doesn't work with the remote (actuator?) and if you push the lock button on the key fob several times the windows roll down. My dad always said it's better to get a car that doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles because there's fewer things to go wrong. Guess he was right!

Hi I got this issue fixed in San Diego with Auto Radio Specialists. They said one of the rear speaker got short and it shorted the outputs of the circuit board on the radio. They had factory circuit boards with them and they replaced my faulty board with that. It works fine now. But only thing, it didnt get as cheap as getting a new small/sleek radio in the empty slot. I had to pay $300 for this operation. Looks like this was a cheaper option compared to getting it done by the dealer.

Hello Guys,

I have similar type of issue on my Honda accord 2003 lx car. I was getting some cranky noise from the speakers and than stopped working the radio. Than my ac and fan stopped working, but radio started working just normal. Blower motor resistor was bod for not working the ac and fan, when I fixed the ac and fan, the radio problems kicked in and I am having the same old problem with my radio. My mechanic says that the connection of ac and radio goes through the same resistor which might cause the problem. But I am not sure though how to fix the problem.

Thanks

I am sorry.. They couldnt really fix it.. THey changed the board but still the issue was there and finally the whole radio unit died out... I asked them to return $300 which they did and replaced the faulty board back on my radio.. I am now in the Bay Area and the Honda dealer says, should show them issue there once and decide if I want to fix with them or not. They are gonna charge $150 just for analysis... Alpine/Honda Issue... hmm...

I have a 2006 Honda Accord 2.4L with this same problem. In my reading about this problem on several websites, I have come up with a theory as to the cause.

I do believe the popping and static sounds are coming from shorting occurring in the speaker wiring as some have suggested...BUT I believe the cause is not the wiring itself. I believe the cause is quite possibly condensation coming from the air conditioning ducts that set above the radio.

Others have mentioned that the problem seemed to occur during or just after a period of high air conditioning use. I know this was the case for me as well. My radio worked just fine in the winter but stopped when summer came. Condensation would also explain the erratic nature of the problem coming and going. It could be that just some insulation would solve the problem.

Your thoughts???

even i am facing the same problem.
it goes goes out with a pop, tried switching the radio fuse, nothing worked out.
but the first time i played the radio after i switched the fuse, it worked but then the same is continues.
i think its an electrical problem , something related to wiring.
anybody knows what to do?

so whats the best option in your opinion, because even if we get a radio from the junk or switch it with other accords, this problem might occur in the future.
should i just go with an after market stereo?

I have the same problems as you. My radio suddenly makes a loud squelching noise and then cuts off. Sometimes it will come back in if I cut it on and off a few times. Sometimes it's weeks before I can ever get it to play again. Also, sometimes the backlight goes black on the radio display. When there is no sound, the display shows everything working correctly. CDs do not work either when this happens.

I just finished dealing w/this same problem. Intermittent dead radio, pops and squeals. Here's my experience.

Radio involved 2003 Honda Accord LX single CD radio. This radio has no security code. This radio isn't compatible w/ the 6 CD radio. 6CD radio is a Panasonic, Single CD is an Alpine. The car wiring harnesses aren't compatible. You may find someone that can deal with this but I didn't try. The single CD radios are difficult to find on the market and very expensive.

I checked my speaker wiring. It was OK.

I pulled out the radio using You Tube video from Matt Payne. Thanks Matt.
I separated the radio box from the radio.

I sent radio box to HI-Tech Electronic Services in Van Nuys Ca. Go to their website for information.

They turned this radio around in 2 days. The cost was $185.00 plus postage. The radio worked fine when I got it back. It's guaranteed for 6 months.

That's it. That's all I got.

I have the same static popping sound problems with the 200x Accord. I was thinking of sending the radio off to Hi-Tec Electronics in Van Nuys CA. Has anyone had positive results from them?

Ultimately if you buy an exact salvage yard radio/ Ebay purchase you will eventually have the same problem occur over time. The problem is within the amplifier within the unit that is failing. Heat is a killer of electronics. The area in which the radio sits in the 200x series accords is exposed to the sun from the top. When you get into a scalding hot car, flip on the A/C, the expansion and contractions are abrupt. This situation will cause PCB's to split the small traces. The heat produced during use is also causing expansion. There is no adequate ventilation where the radio is installed. This can cause condensation to spill down onto the cooling fins of the amp and into the unit from the vent above. The insulation strips are usually dried out in just a few years The heater put on the bi-level setting can heat up that area of the dash significantly along with the heat the radio produces on it own. All these things or just one of them can cause this failure to happen over thousands of miles of bumps and changes in climate, volumes cranked up, shorts in the speakers, having a single CD player adding even more heat spinning discs @ 100's of RPMs, heavy bass overdrives the amp too. So Now you add a crappy made alpine or any radio, this will take its toll. Its like when a fuse blows, by putting a new fuse in is not fixing the problem, your just band aiding the situation because they blow for a reason, same with sticking the same radio back in the same spot, just a matter of time before you're right back where you started. Granted you could have sold the car by the time it happens again, but the problem still exists.

The best way to deal with this IMO is what <Jimmy?> i think was his name? did., Aftermarket radio, mounted in a different place with a real nice dash bezel, with a different type of amp, and an adapter that fits the OEM connector harness to the new radio. If you take your time you can have a better radio with a perfect fit connector that has no splicing involved at all. Speakers ohm rating could be an issue, but most new radios come with an auto sensing resistance amp that adjust over multiple OHM ratings. If you want to be exact you could look on the magnet of the speakers and the ohm rating will be there. Usually they are the same front and back. You will end up with a nicer radio with better options (because you will custom pick the options to your choosing) and best of all no more problems (except for murphy and his laws of course). They have Ipod/pad specific connections, remotes, some with blue tooth hands free phone connection,, detachable face plates for security... all depending on how much you want to spend. Just my two cents, I think it sucks that Honda doesn't step up, and they could have nipped it early on too. Radio are an important part of a driving experience... in some cases cut down on road rage (depending on the music i guess) and Honda used the audio system as a reason to buy their cars within the ads too.

No, it is not shorting of the speaker wiring. I replaced the radio with a Boss car radio using the same plug and the speakers have worked perfectly for the past two years. It is the radio itself! I guess that the Alpine radio was placed in a crappy location exposed to heat and cold extremes and was doomed to fail miserably. Replace the radio but at the lover position down the console. :-(

Hello,

Thank you for all the useful information posted on this thread. It has helped me diagnose and determine what to do. I haven't had sound in my car for 6+ years because honda quoted me $6000 to replace it. After reading the thread here I decided to replace the whole air and radio unit in my 2003 accord and replace it with a PAC RPK4-HD1101. This allows you to have a double din slot and keep the lower storage compartment below. It's about $200-$250 just for the frame with air controls but it looks great and I think keeps the value of the car. I put a Sony double din touchscreen display with apple car play and I have great sound and a great interface. I hope this is helpful...
