I was driving home on the 4th of july and my Oil light came on. It completely stays red when im at a complete stop and starts flickering when im driving. I checked the oil and it was pretty low so i added some (about 3 qts) and i also looked underneath for any oil leaks and there's none visible. I recently bought the car about 2 weeks ago from a private owner and he said he had changed the radiator. Im thinking they might of put the oil cooler in wrong but that would have raisin the temp gauge if im correct. There's really nothing wrong with the car that i can hear, no knocking and it hasn't stalled on. I know how people say "if it's not broken, dont fix it" but i hope it doesn't lead to anything major. Please help me if you have any input because some could be better than none and i'd really appreciate it....

ok so you added 3 qts meaning you only had 1 qt in the engine. is the light still coming on after adding oil? if so then there must be other problems, maybe the oil pickup tube is blocked or oil pump is bad. you need to find out ASAP before your engine dies.

EDIT: also you posted in the wrong section.

When my oil light was comming on at idle, it was the oil pickup screen for the oil pump clogging up. Took the pan off, cleaned the screen an the light went away. This may, or may not be your problem. I suspect the problem will only get worse.

Thanks for the reply guys and sorry if i posted in the wrong section, still a newbie to this. But umm yeah, i did all of the obvious and still yet to take off the oil pan. Think im just going to take it to a mechanic who my company has a contract with. Hopefully i don't need a new motor, just finished a tranny job and im not looking forward to do another one....Thanks again, ill keep you guys updated on things, oh by the way, what section did i post in?

dont sweat it just yet...its prob burning oil (bad head gasket,valve seals,who knos) but it might not be real bad...just check your oil occasionally and make sure its not leaking...as long as you dont beat on it too bad it should be ok

If your loosing oil but don't see any evidence of an outside leak then check your radiator fluid, make sure your radiator fluid isn't mixing with your oil (you can tell if it is). If so, then thats no bueno.

FIXED THE PROBLEM!

I went ahead and changed the oil sending unit, Oil change w/new oil filter, oil pan gasket and unbolted my oil pick-up and blew it off with a blow gun....Not to sure which one fixed the problem but im leaning towards my oil sending unit since the oil light would only flicker when i start driving....I APPRECIATE all the help guys, THANKZ!
