Default Oil consumption and resale

My dad has an '04 Accord LX w/K24 that he's going to trade in on a '13 Accord. Everything works great on it except it started consuming oil 2-3 years ago. It's gotten pretty bad to the point where on their recent road trip he had to add a quart every 250 miles or so. He's still using 5W-20.

I think I heard oil consumption is pretty common with these, but he's worried about the resale value. Is this a big problem that could severely impact resale (trading in to a Honda dealer, remember), or is there usually an easy explanation and fix with these?

My 06 K24 Accord was solid. IIRC, never needed to add oil between changes. My current J35s do need some between changes. So I do like the K24.

Unfortunately, in this game, it's about don't ask and don't tell. I understand some men (maybe your dad) is honest to the core (you know what I mean), but I would say engine issues would take $2K off the trade in value (if they even want the car). So for your (dad's) sake, don't tell.

Shine that puppy up and enjoy the new car.

BTW, how does he know he would like a 2013 Accord? Do you mean 2012?

If your dad wants to get the most resale value, he should consider selling it as a private party.

Wow, that is pretty bad. Have you checked to make sure there are no leaks?

Does the car smoke bad? 4 quarts in ~1000 miles should equate to pretty heavy smoke when ever accelerating. If it is burning this much oil the cat is probably ****ed also.

My wife's '03 does not burn any oil with ~130k on the clock.

2013. He had 5 straight generations of Accord (from the flip-up lights to his '04) but I finally talked him into NOT getting rid of an Accord once it hits 60k, such a waste of money. Current gen didn't impress him anyway. New gen has the added tech and gas mileage he's looking for, so as long as it's not a complete turd (looks like it won't be) he's set on getting one as soon as they come out.

Considering that. Will depend on what they give us private party. The thing GoLowDrew mentioned above about being honest is a major factor. He doesn't want to just make it someone else's problem. At least by trading it in at a Honda dealership, they can figure it out and take care of it before it's sold. Plus with 9.5% sales tax in WA, trading it in can make sense since you can use the trade-in value to avoid some sales tax on the new car.

I'm leaving town for like a month lol, but I'll try to make it up to their place and check it out. I don't think it's leaking, he would notice on the garage floor. Maybe it's a leak that only happens when operating and it burns off?
