I isolated the noise in my suspension and come to the conclusion that I need to replace one of my from wheel bearings. I’m looking for some advice before I go banging around my wife’s car.
Here is the background info.
I’ve already done bearings my old 95 accord ( 360k miles, may she rest in peace). My tools are a little more than basic ( cordless impact wrench, ratcheting 3/8” drive and sockets, ratcheting wrenches..etc). I don’t have a sliding hammer and I don’t have a 2-ton press, so I decided to just replace the bearing and the hub ( hub cost an additional $48). When I did the bearing on my 95 accord I fought for hours to get the bearing race off the hub, so I’m not interested in doing that again.
Here’s the info I’m looking for.
Anyone else out there done these bearings before who can offer some tips?
Do I need to take the whole knuckle off or can I drive the bearing out of the knuckle with a hammer and chisel? From all the parts diagrams I’ve seen it appears that the bearing is not bolted to the knuckle ( unlike like my old ’95) so it seems that I have to place the bearing on the hub, then insert the hub-bearing assembly into the knuckle.. true?
FYI.. I know I have to take of the caliper, rotor, sensor assembly, and axel nut. Can I get the axel out without removing the lower control arm ? can I leave the axel in place and work around it? Thanks in advance .
