I prefer to use synthetic with a longer oil change interval. However oil related failures are quite rare unless you have one of the Toyota, VW/Audi, Chrysler or Saab engines particularly prone to sludge problems. I think the preponderance of evidence says if you change your oil regularly, there should be no problems with non synthetic.

I used to have a 2003 Saab 9-5 with one of those sludge prone engines. I noticed the year after mine, Saab specified a synthetic oil (with 15K change interval!) and I tend to think that was the effective solution to that problem. Anyhow the problem did not apply to 2004 and later engines. Mine was sold at 106K with no problems known.

I have been told the sludge prone engines may have a design flaw in especially small oil passages, which clog easily when sludge develops. That would improve the confidence that this problem would not apply to Honda engines, only to particular designs of other makes.

The most important factor seems to be regular oil changes, and either synthetic or non-synthetic should work well.

Hope this helps. -- C44

I use conventional because I only go on short trips and tend to have an issue with fuel dilution. I prefer to change my oil on shorter intervals (4 mo & 3-4k miles) to maintain viscosity. Looking under the fill cap, I see no varnish or sludge.
