Looking to buy
I'm purchasing an '08 accord coupe ex-l w/ navi on friday. It has 46k miles and is certified pre-owned from a dealer. Sale price is 18.9 which is better than comparable accords in my area so pretty happy about that. It's certified and they replaced the rear brakes as well as all the fluids and some other minor things.
I've been searching on google for issues with the car and rear brakes seems to come up a lot as well as an issue with headlights dimming or something? Any insight on these issues or any others I should look into would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Looking to buy
Hi B-rad, check oil comsumption, or as the seller about the oil ring problem. Not sure if the 08s have the same problem, but many 99 through 07s with the 2.4l iVTEC engines, have this thing where they use a lot of oil, like 1 quart every 1000 miles! The oil rings were installed incorrectly, and allow the oil to seep into the combustion chamber.
The 08s may not have this issue. Is it a 4 cylinder or V6?

Re: Looking to buy
I bought the car! I asked the dealer about the rear brake lawsuit and he informed me they're using different brakes now which should be a lot better. I didn't realize there was such a large oil consumption issue with this car though.. crap..lol. I have a 7 year 100k bumper to bumper at least (up til 2015 since 7 years from 08) so if it causes an issue it will be covered until I have it paid off which is nice. Do all '08 accords have the oil consumption issue? I didn't see any lawsuits or anything like I did for the brakes. Guess i'll just keep an eye on it..bleh now i'm bummed. My last car was a nightmare with issues which is why I went with a honda heh. I also found out what the light dimming issue is. It's just when the a/c gets a bit louder like the fan kicks in or something the lights might slightly dim for a second. I don't see how that's an issue lol.
On a related note what kind of oil should I use? If it consumes a liter per 1k should I not bother with synthetic then? Also the accord I bought was from cali so it has their emissions. I looked it up but could someone clarify the differences? Thanks
Sorry for all the questions!

Re: Looking to buy
Congrats! It is a great car! The oil issue, is not a big deal, and your car may not experience it. But if you do as you are supposed to, by doing a weekly check, you will be fine and thrilled! Sunday mornings is when I check fluid levels, tire pressures, look for leaks, and general inspections, belts, hoses, wiper blades, etc. If you do that once a week, you will be fine.
Now about your warranty. Is it a Honda certified car warranty? Did they tell you specifically that is starts the day you bought it? My certified 7/100K, started from the manufacture date of the car, not the day I bought it!
My car was assembled in Dec. 2003, and I bought her in July 2005, with 12k miles, but my 7/100k ended in Dec. 2010. So make sure. Don't assume that your 7/100k starts the day you bought it and at 46K miles, OK?
If you do happen to get a 2.4l that uses oil, you still have to use fully synthetic, 5W20, the engine requires it, but you can use Mobil One, 5W20, and be good to go.
I use Royal Purple, 5W20, and have, since I bought her. Now that I have the consumption issue, I may roll down to Mobil One, 5W20. But I am not sure yet.
In any event, enjoy your Honda Accord, Coupe! It is a great, fun car to drive, and will give you years of fun and excitement!

Re: Looking to buy
Thanks for the post! And yeah it's a honda bumper to bumper 7 year 100k warranty that I purchased. They said it's good til 2015 since it was when the car was first sold apparently and I have that in writing on the contract . I guess 1 quart every 1k miles isn't that big of a deal especially since I don't put that many miles on the car at all. I really love the car so far and like how everything is voice activated (a/c, navi, etc). Such a step up from my '96 maxima which had 204k miles on it lol.
I'm thinking about doing mobile 1 synthetic then. The previous owner didn't use synthetic i'm sure for the first 46k miles (was a lease) so does that matter? Do I need to do anything to get the car ready for synthetic or just do a normal oil change? Also, should I use 5w20 year round or diff kind like 5w30 in winter/summer? I'm on the east coast so get cold winters and hot summers.

Re: Looking to buy
I just bought an 08 Accord LX 2.4L.
Burning 1 qt of oil every 1,000 miles is a BIG deal. I put 3,000 miles on mine already and having checked the oil I am not burning any oil.
With you bumper to bumper warranty you should be able to have the oil burning issue taking care of.
