Just bought an 03 Accord
Ok, so I just picked up a 2003 accord with 240,000 miles. Great car, I love it. It looks decent, it's fully loaded, front and rear disc brakes, v6 engine.. and I got it for 3k! Then the tranny slipped, again and again.... I drive it to work everyday and for the most part the car performs well. I've had it for 3 weeks and it only slips when I get on the gas. I'm scared though, I've heard a replacement tranny can be as much as 3k. Which, granted, isn't a whole lot of money.. unless your a college kid working at Mr.Burrito. My question was has anyone who has owned an 7th gen accord, what was it like when your tranny finally died? Did it go slowly and trudged on until it took it's last breath of ATF or did it all of a sudden passed in it's sleep with little or no prior warning?

I owned a 7th Gen but not that old. From what I read, the AT usually die somewhere on the road, rather than wake up in the morning, jump in, and AT failed, in your driveway.
The price you paid ($3K) IMO, was already adjusted for the cost of a new AT. I would value a great condition Accord V6 with a good AT at $5-5.5K in the marketplace.
I would start shopping for a remanufacture AT. Once that is done, happy motoring.
AT on V6 have always been the weakest link then the car gets old. It should be something "old" Honda owners should expect and plan - budget for.

Re: Just bought an 03 Accord
I have an 03 V6 sedan myself. I've owned it since new, so I took good care of the transmission. 3K would be a low estimate, at a Honda dealership, so my advise is to shop around and find out which rebuilders do the best job, for the best price. Good luck.

To SuperMario92: A good tranny re-builder will charge you around $3K w/warranty. You can save about $500 if you take the tranny out yourself.

My 03 2.4 has 218k on it, I'd gladly sell it for $3200 and I have no trans issues. No way V6 with 240k is in the 5k range. More like what the guy paid for it, but with a bad trans I'd say more like $2500.

Re: Just bought an 03 Accord
Drain a bit of fluid from the trans into a pan. Then take the pan into the sunlight.
Do you see sparkles (tiny pieces of meal reflecting light). You are probably screwed and likely need a new transmission.
No sparkles or floating metal bits? You might be able to get away with replacing the tranny fluid.
Try redline transmision fluid. It's expensive, but it can prolong the life of a transmission that is on it's way out. If it works, GREAT! If not, time to look into a rebuild of your transmission or sourcing a used transmission.
