Default J35 Engine Misfires, Etc on v6 Accords

I have read about how the 2008-2012 Accord V6 engines can have the dreaded misfire problem which could mean an engine rebuild is needed.

Do the 2013-newer Accord V6s also suffer from this problem, or has it been rectified by this generation of Accords? I was planning on buying a 2008 Accord V6, but think I might wait and get the 2013 or newer when the time comes.

Also any other issues with Accords from around that time period? I heard the auto trannies may not be the best either, but doesn't seem to be as bad as the misfire problem.

Also has the battery drain problem been fixed by 2013?

Nobody has any comments on this or is running a 2013-up Accord V6?

This misfires happened on both my J36V6 engines. For some of us, this is the "norm" as we all expected it.

Here is what you can do, if it happens to you.

1. Change the plugs yourself. The VCM cause the plug to wear out faster.

2. Let Honda do it. Honda also extended the warranty to like 8 years and XXXXXXX miles (you can look that up, as I don't recall off hand). Honda will also update the programming of the VCM, so it does not kick in that often. Some claim a change in MPG of about 1.

The misfire does not mean an engine rebuilt is needed. I would say, that's far from it. It just mean the spark plugs is worn out. You can interpret that yourself.

Some J35 do experience oil consumption. The definition of oil consumption has changed. I think it's now consider acceptable to use 1 quart per 1,000 miles.

Both my J35 used a bit of oil when it was new. After it past the ???? can;t recall so I'll say about 40K+, it stop burning oil inbetween oil changes.

Will not stop me from buying a Gen 8 Accord, no.

As for the automatic transmission, most of us owners change the ATF every 20-30,000 miles. I don;'t know what Honda recommends, because no one follows that. I think Honda recommends either 65K miles or 90K miles. If you are buying a used car, I would do a 3X drain and fill to get all the old ATF out. You can only drain out 3 qt each time.

So the misfire problems happens on even 2013-up? Sounds like a huge engineering issue with Honda on the V6. How often do you recommend changing the plugs? After looking at the engine bay, the plugs don't seem easy to get at with how crowded it is in there. I'm not that familiar with this engine, so its all new to me.

The 2013s are too early to tell. There is no official notice on the 9th gen Accord V6. I also own a 2014 Odyssey. No notice or issues. My past Honda V6 cars are/were 2009 and 2010.

The misfiring generally occurs at around 56-57K miles. Most 2013 don't have that mileage yet. So that tells you when you may want to change it or when you can expect to change it. And if the check engine light comes on, no worries and no panic. It's just the plugs.

Yes, the rear banks are a bit hard to reach.

Is it an engineering issue? No, IMO. This happens because of cylinder deactivation. The V6 shuts down to 4 and 3 cylinders to save fuel. I've not follow GM or Benz.Chrysler-Benz products to see if they experienced the same issues. I don't own these vehicles. You are welcome to research that. I've always gotten better than EPA MPG numbers, without trying on the hwy - because of cylinder deactivation. This just the downside that can happen, doesn't mean it will. Some owners are up to 200,000 on their V6 and never had this "problem."

I'm happy with it. So it's not a big deal to me, if my 2014 Odyssey needs plugs early sometime down the road.
