Default j30 ivtec swap for vtec engine

Okay I just bought a 2003 accord v6, 6 speed that someone swapped in a j30 ivtec engine in . Every time I get the car up to 5400 rpm the engine makes a terrible grinding noise. If I hold it to long it causes the car to go in limp mode . Is there anything I can do to keep this engine and not have to replace with j30a4 .

So I have done more research and Honda went to I-vtec around 07-08 . Well around that same time Honda accord up graded to a 3.5 v6 . So my question is what did this j30a I-vtec engine come out of ? do they even offer a usdm manual ecu with immobilizer ignition and key for this engine ?

From what I'm seeing, I can't even find a ecu for a i-vtec J30 any where( or at least a manual one ) . So I'm coming to the conclusion that either I disconnect the vtec and drive it with no vtec or just pull the engine and swap back in j30a4 . Does anyone have any feed back or anything else to add, cause from what I'm seeing online there's not much info to go by .

For anyone attempting this conversion. I just learned after removing a valve cover that these jdm J30a I-vtec engines don't actually have vtec. They only have vcm. So trying to wire vtec will never work. I wasted over a year to finally come to this conclusion. I am only reposting to aid someone in this situation as I could not find any helpful information online anywhere!

Are you sure they don't have VTEC? I was sure that all the SOHC J series engines had VTEC on the intake side at least. Do you have any pictures of the valve train?

What sort of diagnostic trouble codes were coming up?

I am sure. There is no vtec rocker arm actuator assembly therefore vtec does not exist. Dtc's I am getting are a p2647 along with both tcs indicator lights and it also disables cruise control. I have the original usdm heads that I'm likely going to put on the jdm block and hope that will work. I didn't take any pics. In the mean time though I do believe there is a vtec bypass procedure that can be pigtailed in to trick the ecm in to thinking it is a vtec engine which should allow everything to function normally. Don't quote me on that though.

These J30a I-vtec engines only have variable cylinder management (cylinder deactivation). It was introduced as a hybrid engine. They don't have vtec.

Did anyone figure this out? I put the j30a into my 03 accord. Same thing, p2647. I have the old US motor. Put those heads on or F it? Just find another j30a4? Thanks

Hi. Yeah the j30a heads don’t actually have vtec rocker arms. Sucks eh. I got tricked in to buying an I-vtec engine and got told they would we’re the same. Tried to do my homework before the purchase but isn’t much info out there. So I believe in theory if your j30a4 heads are good then they should work on the j30a block. I have not had the time to try it yet but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. Let me know how it goes

did this and it actually worked. Engine still doesn’t have v-tec but I have no instrument cluster lights on now and it will smoothly accelerate up to 6k rpm’s now. Just make sure the pressure switch remains unplugged

I have a 2005 Honda accord 3.0l ivtec hybrid. I put in 3.5l j35a8 from a 2007 Acura RL Sh and, I put all hybrid component on the 3.5 and it runs but when it gets to 3800 rpms it shuts down. What do I need to change?

This maybe hard to believe or understand, But,there are three wires, yellow, blue and green that connect to the rocker arm oil pressure switch plug that was part of the i-vtec harness and two wires black and green that connect to the rocker arm solenoid that was part of the i-vtec harness. I took the rocker arm oil pressure switch and put it in the place of the vtec oil pressure switch in the oil filter adapter housing, then cut blue wire from the plug and put a d battery (flashlight battery)inline grounded to the car battery, ran the green wire that went to the i-vtec solenoid to the vtec solenoid and grounded the black wire to the block. It runs great until the d battery starts to loose the 1.5 volts it take to fool the ecu. I just thought somebody may have figured out something better.
