Default Honda Accord 2015 Vtec not engaging

Hi all, I registered to add to this forum about the issues I was having about vtec not engaging.

First of all, I have a brand new 2015 Accord V6 MT Coupe (less than 10k km on it now) that recently started to sputter and act as if it was hitting the rev-limiter at the vtec point.

Initially I thought it had to do with the fuel maps or ECU. Since driving it off the lot, it had not had an oil change till today. I noticed it was very low and the maintenance wrench (15% oil life) was triggered today (~9500kms).

I picked up a litre of 0-20 syn oil and it was still registering low by the dipstick, however the vtec engagement problem was solved. I then went to my honda dealer to explain and get an oil change as well. The nominal volume of oil should be 4.2 litres, and I was over at least 1 litre short.

In short the cause was low oil. The Vtec solenoid was not able to provide sufficient oil pressure to make the switch, hence the sputter. It's funny that no CEL or low oil indicator was thrown, even though the dipstick was dry. I am not leaking oil anywhere as it is parked in a level indoor (secure) spot every time and no spots on the ground. I figure it's part of the break-in period and hopefully the oil level will stabilize after today. I hate that I was driving around with less than nominal oil level and with no indication, other than the vtec sputter.

Honda allows for up to 1qt of oil burning per 1k miles. Honestly that is a bit excessive I think. In the owners manual it also says to periodically check the oil level, this is more Important now that oil changes arent done at the old 3000miles ot 3 months And are more likely being done double That with the maintenance minder. And if your talking about your vtec not properly functioning, it sounds like you probably drive your car somewhat harD. Not that it's a problem, but aggressive driving and spending more time in the higher rpm range tends to burn more oil than if you granny it. With all that being said there is most likely is nothing wrong.

You still have to manually check the oil level.

The Maintenance Minder calculates remaining oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). If the engine runs at higher temperatures and rpm, or at low temperatures during short trips, the oil life will deplete faster than an engine running under more normal conditions. It counts down from the last time the minder was reset; but, does not monitor the oil levels or tell you if it is low.

If you wait till the low oil pressure light comes on, your car may end up having more serious issues.
