High altitude Mpg

High altitude Mpg
I just returned to TX from a road trip through Colorado and had a question concerning Mpg on my 2013 Accord Sport.
Driving long distances in TX we generally get around 28-29 mpg with the
ecoboost" turned on and 25-27 mpg running around town with it off.
In Colorado at 8000' above sea level and higher with the "ecoboost" on we consistently had a minimum of 33 mpg and a high of 40 mpg with the norm being 37-38 mpg. It was great!
As soon as we returned to the lower TX altitudes or mpg went right back to the usual 28 mpg.
What is the reason for this, and what can I do to to get the car back up to the high altitude MPG?
