Faint transmission whine in 3rd and 5th (should I be concerned)
Hey All! I'm new to the board... it's a pleasure meeting you all!
I just picked up an '03 Accord V6, automatic with 65,000 miles on it. When I test drove it, of course I had the windows down and the sunroof open virtually ensuring I'd hear no drivetrain issues at all. IDIOT!
Oh well. After driving it for a week and taking it on a 300 mile round trip up into the mountains, I'm noticing transmission whine in 3rd and very faintly in 5th. My wife says she can't hear it at all, but I think that's due to one too many Madonna and Cyndi Lauper concerts.
I did a search and found there was a recall on the 2nd gear oiling jet of this tranny, but Honda records indicate this was taken care of on this car.
It was a one owner vehicle and she was around 50 years old. I doubt she was drag racing it. All service was done at Honda including the oil changes.
Is this Honda automatic tranny whine thing normal. I've seen numerous issues with the 3rd gear clutch pack. Is that this tranny? I got the car at a good price and could easily turn it if I need to. However, I kinda like 29mpg and plenty of torque for the mountains.
Help...

In a Junkyard near you.
It could be normal for that car. I've installed many remanned trannys that still have a whine. Just keep an eye on the fluid for a few thousand or so miles (color and level) If it's burning the fluid quickly you need to take some action.
We've been replacing more and more transmissions on these cars. But the good news is AHM has been helping most of the customers out with the costs.

Well, with your recommendation of my car burning fluid quickly I took it in today to my local dealership. I called AHM this morning prior to going to the dealership and got the word to talk to the Service Manager. That worked well, as the SM is not going to charge me a fee to see what's going on with my transmission.
Oh, i'm not "burning" fluid as in losing any, it's literally burning it and fouling the fluid much faster than it should. It hasn't been 10,000 miles since I did a 3x drain and fill and it's smells burnt like toast.
Well, i'm waiting on a phone call with a diagnosis and hopefully some support from AHM.
Let's keep our fingers crossed...

Well, the dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong with my transmission. They also said the fluid isn't that bad.
So, they can't give a favorable recommendation to AHM for me to get tranny work.
Oh well, atleast it's in the books that they checked it.
I don't know.

Re: (p10hlm)
what's my options?
I could go to another dealership i guess.
I'm going to do a drain and fill tomorrow and see how fast the fluid takes to disintegrate

Original poster here....
The tranny indeed took a dump.... WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP GETTING A RECALL DONE!!!
The dealership was so cool. They offered to replace the tranny for free or give me NADA trade in on it and $2000 off MSRP on any model I want.
The wife has been wanting a Civic SI sedan, and now she has one. A 2009 Si at that! Go Honda of Thornton, CO kicks A$$!
