E-brake on Automatics

E-brake on Automatics
Do you guys pop the e-brake in your automatics when you park? I noticed most "normal" non car people DON'T. But I always have. Is there really a big benefit? I'm talking mainly about normal parking, not on a hill or anything like that. Just normal parking...Do you guys do this? What happens if I stop doing this?

lol man same thing for me.. I don't, there is really no point too unless you want to feel more secure haha... but I now do because everytime i didn't whoever else that was in my car would nag at me for not doing it.. I dont see a point but I don't when im alone

I always use it. Probably because 99% of all cars I've owned have been manual trans. But I think the extra 2 seconds it takes to set it, and remove is worth any chances of it rolling away.

I have a manual and an automatic, and the only time I use the E-brake is if I park on an incline. If I park on flat ground, the automatic goes in Park, and the manual goes in 1st or reverse (depending on which direction I will be going when I return), and the E-brake is not applied. I am 45 years old, and I haven't had a car roll away on me yet. If you can put the car in neutral, and it doesn't roll, I think it's unnecessary to use the E-brake.

if the ebrake is easly accessable (right by the gear selector) i always use it. why? so it puts that much less stress on the auto trans. Its best to stop, pull the ebrake before putting the car in park, that way if you are on even the slightest hill, the ebrake will be holding you, and not the parking pin inside the transmission.
No this is not nesicary, does it help? i like to think so...Its just one more thing you can do to make your car last a little bit longer.

not using the ebrake does not put any extra stress on your transmission. the parking pawl is basically locking the axles. the only problem i've seen is if you don't use it regularily it can seize up. so if you buy a used auto and start using the ebrake the cable can seize...
and yes, you should apply the parking brake on an incline for safety.

if you park on an incline regularly (drive way) there can be extra stress on your parking pin in the transmission. Is it likely it will be the end of your trans?? NO! BUT...it is just another little thing you can do to help prevent it..

Yes, if you park on an incline, you should use the E-brake. If the weight of the car is resting on the Park prawl, the shift lever will be difficult to move from the Park position. But if you park on flat ground, where the car would not roll even in neutral, there is no reason to use the E-brake. There is a store I go to once or twice a month, and it has a parking lot on an incline, so I will always use the E-brake there. It is the only place I have ever used it, and I haven't had a car roll away on me yet (45 years).

haha im not worried about the car rolling away, just trying to help alleviate the hard shift from park into gear that one comes across when parking on an incline.

When parking on an incline, some people still don't apply the hand brake properly. I put the shift lever in neutral, set the hand brake, then release the foot brake and put the shift lever in park. If you put the shift lever in park, and release the foot brake before applying the hand brake, it does no good, because the weight is still resting on the park pin.

i did just like you when i had my accord, well i pulled up somewhere while holding the car in drive with the foot brake set the e brake than shifted into park.

Quite frankly, I see no point in engaging the e-brake on an automatic.. but if you feel unsafe or unsecure that your car might get stolen or towed away... It`s up to you anyway.

I only use my E brake when I'm leaving the car for long periods of time, like overnight or when I am not near it, otherwise it is just another thing you could forget to do before you start driving.

Dude, I ALWAYS brake then when i want to stop I pull the e-brake, change from D to N, THEN to P. And that's all there is to it. No bother to it, so why NOT do it?

I drive an automatic and I always use the E-brake. Normally I park on an incline and if I don't use the E-brake the transmission makes a grinding sound that is very harsh to my ears when shifting into reverse.

Yeah thats what i do, when i am in d i go to N and than pull the e brake, and then to P. its safer, but i do it when parking on icline.

In the UK - where most cars are manual - the 'handbrake' is always used when parking, even on automatics. In a manual, if you only stop the car from rolling away by putting it in gear, you are putting a strain on the timing belt and other parts as they don't have a parking pawl like automatics. It doesn't take long to pull it up even in an auto, so why not use it.
