When the adjusting screw was off, did you screw it all the way back in ? I normally remove it all the way so I can clean and the lube the threads on the adjuster.
Then screw it all the way in, install all hardware and shoes then the drum. The use my "drum spoon" to adjust the adjuster to get the proper drag on the drum,

So just curious, did you see a source of a brake fluid leak? The one that made your puddle? That should be your major concern. Could be a bad seal in the wheel cylinder or a bad line but either way your gonna want to tackle that first. You'll just have brake fluid contaminated brake shoes if ya don't tackle that first.
"poorman212" has got you covered on the drum fitting on though. Get the adjuster set so that it is relatively close to where it needs to be in the end but mainly to where at least the drum fits on and then go through the back of your brake drum mounting plate's "adjuster access hole" when you have the drum on and use the spoon to get the adjuster in spec for proper drag like "poorman212" said.
