Default The dreaded 3rd gear grind. just had clutch replaced.

So the story of my 666 continues. Bad clutch and broken flywheel $2445, breather hose $30, rear main o ring, power steering sucking air bad o ring, and now I fear 3rd gear synchro has taken a beating. What can I expect and do to prevent future damage? Estimated repair cost?

I've never found a good solution to avoid the occasional grind in 3rd, sorry. However, I can help you out with a replacement estimate. I did clutch, flywheel, and tranny swap all at once for $3500 through a local shop.

I changed to Amsoil fluid in my old 6-6 and my grind went away completely.

I did this at about 8k miles new and I never looked back.

Coming up on 139k using AmsOil, same result, no grind.

Looks like I might need to give Amsoil a try. My current 3rd gear isn't nearly as bad as my old one. It grinds probably around once a month, pretty much at random. Before I had the tranny replaced, it would grind about every other day the first time I shifted into third for the day, and then intermittently between then maybe 1% of the time. It usually wouldn't happen if I babied it in, but even that wasn't enough, occasionally.

How bad is your grind, VeeSykkz? And how bad was the grind for everyone else?

Dang, not being able to work on your own car really does cost.

I can usually feel whether it's seated in gear or not. If I suspect I just pull back and do over to be sure. It happens rather rarely I'd say, but I'm still breaking the clutch and the while car in.

I haven't checked the tranny oil yet, but will surely use high grade lubricants. I always have.
