Confused
07 Accord LX 4 cylinder. CEL came on. Honda said I needed new O2 sensor which I declined at the time. Invoice indicates need AF. Engine has extremely low idle and rattles and almost dies but this only occurs when I fill up. Took it to Autozone and received the code P0171. Based on good advice from another forum, I replaced the airfilter and cleaned the MAF but the light is back on and gas mileage is decreasing quickly. I've read elsewhere that this shouldn't be an O2 sensor but could it be? I know this is a very common code but every thread I read says something a little different about a different car. I appreciate your help.

It's a lean code, could be a gas issue such as too much ethanol in the gas, could be a valve adj issue, maf got some crap in it... You need to see what your fuel trims are.

Basically states in some service news articles to check the maf first, possible debris in it, bugs ect.. Do not use any chemicals or compressed air as this will damage the sensor and you will need to replace it.

Re: Confused
Thanks. I'd already cleaned the MAF and replaced the air filter. I wound up biting the bullet and taking it to Honda yesterday. I don't want to tell you how much I spent because it still hurts but from what they told me, the O2 sensor was bad because an axle seal was broken and leaking transmission fluid onto it and shorting it out. All fixed now. Better safe than sorry but I always wonder if my naivete gets me into big trouble.
