A guy I know mentioned a problem with "broken rings" on his 2003 4 cylinder Accord. It is stock as far as I know.

Has anyone heard if this is a widespread problem and if there is anything Honda is doing for owners of affected vehicles?

How many miles were on his accord? I would imagine that the average mileage on 03 accords is 100K+, which means that worn/cracked piston rings are due to normal wear and/or lack of maintenance. There isn't a "widespread" piston ring problem, and Honda won't be providing any assistance on a vehicle that is 8 years old that needs a repair based on wear and/or lack of maintenance. The life of piston rings depends heavily on the mileage, style of driving, and maintenance of the vehicle and the rate at which they get worn out is a variable.
