Thanks for allowing me to join. It's hot as you know what here and my air conditioner has stopped cooling. The fan works and blows hot air and there is no noise coming from under the hood. After charging the system and checking for leaks, I was told by a local mechanic that the compressor and receiver drier need replacing for $985. Does this sound reasonable? Is there anything else I can do? Would it be cheaper to take it to the dealer mechanic instead? Thanks for any help or advice.

I would get a second opinion, but it's probably going to cost you either way. A/C systems are not something most do-it-yourself guys can do on their own, and the shops know it, unfortunately.

Nothing at all, sorry. I'm sure they know what they're doing, but who knows for sure because every shop is different, with different employees and management. I know the local dealership bent me over $650, and I didn't even need a compressor. Good luck
