Accord 2003 Started Overheating

Last night our 2003 Accord began overheating. A smell like syrup came from the engine. Will look at this morning when it is cooled down. Wondering if it is low on coolant or water but have no clue beyond that. Any ideas?

Coolant low, thermostat, defective radiator cap, broken belt???
