I'm dealing with a 91 Accord wagon that has been an absolute pain in my side. Recently, it had been stalling on my daughter. She wasn't able to put it in neutral while coasting and re-start; she had to pull off the road, stop, put in park, then it would restart. I read where it is likely the ICM (as the tach was jumpy as well), so I pulled the dist. cap. The inside of the cap was fried, as was the post on the igniter. I had a spare distributor (from a '90 Accord) so I swapped them and put on a new dist. cap.

First time I drive the car after the swap and the speedometer doesn't work. It was working fine before. Also, the check engine light came on and the infamous "s" was flashing. Shut the car off, turned back on: neither check engine nor "s" lit up, but still no speedometer. Is this just a fluke, or is there any connection between the distributor and the speed sensor? Could it be the ICM? And if so, should I swap the one out of the dist. with the fried igniter? I was worried that the ICM might be bad and caused the igniter problem.

Looks like I may have found the answer, which really surprises me. So I am posting to possibly help the next guy...if there is one ;-)

Went to AutoZone's site to look at cost for a distributor, saw they sold ICM and in the description saw this for symptoms of a bad ICM: "...inconsistent transmission shift points".

Who duh thunk it.
