Default 2005 Honda Accord/Loud Non-ticking Noise During Start-uo

During cold starts, while starting up the Accord, there's this loud "clanking," sound, like a metal jug shaking all kinds of heavy metal, or like large solenoids clicking loudly on a metal pipe, or even sounds like gears out-a-whack. (Trying to describe the sound to the best of my knowledge)

To pin-point the sound, it sounds like it's coming from the starter area, or at least I'd like to think is, but somewhere near the lower area of the motor.

After the engine turns over, everything is fine. No loss in power, nothing wrong with it's drivability, pretty much all systems go.

The noise is heard during start-ups (warm and cold), as my Mom pulled up, she said, "hey, listen to this." She shuts off the vehicle, and starts it back up, same noise, but not as loud as during cold start-ups.

This isn't your ordinary "whining," "whirring," or "winding" sound after start up. This is a distinct loud behavior during start up.

Please keep in mind, that before this sound came into play, during warm start-ups, the car took a while to start (hesitation), we "assumed," it was the battery not having enough juice. I know, I know, "why didn't we check that from the start." Lately we've been so busy with the new house and settling. Most of us would know how that is.

So any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

2005 Honda Accord DX
Automatic
2WD/4DR
Power everything.

Thanks.

sounds like a starter flywheel issue. it could either be a flat spot on the flywheel where the teeth have been ground away, or more likely it is a starter that is not engaging correctly.

my vote would be for the later.

Ditto, plus it is cheaper and easier to change. Probably the starter solenoid is not allowing the gear to fully engage the flywheel, or the teeth have been grounded down (like from "starting" the car when it is already running). Good luck

Replaced the starter and problem solved.
