2004 V6 won't crank sometimes
There have been several threads on this general topic, but my situation is different. Here's what is happening---
For the first time, last week, when I tried to start the car, I heard a single click, and nothing happened--no cranking at all. The lights are bright. I used the key controls to lock the door, open the door, I then physically opened and closed the door, and then the car started without difficulty.
This has been going on for about fifty starts, with this problem occurring about once every ten starts.
Just today when I tried this method when the car wouldn't start, and it didn't work. So I put the key in the ignition to the run position, held my foot on the brake, and moved the shift lever to Neutral and then turned the key to start. The car started right up.
My uneducated guess is that this is either the security system or the gear shift sensor. Please give me your wisdom. Can I check the gear position sensor? Can I troubleshoot these systems? I'm scared to death to take it to a dealer when the car is working good.
Thanks,
Howard

to me it sounds like your starter brushes are worn... but I don't know how switching to neutral would affect that and allow it to start... hence my comment about brake switch.
