2003 Honda Accord I4 Squeling on Startup
I'm going to record this via a camera this comming weekend if my description isnt the best.
Every morning on startup there is a squeling noise from the engine bay. Im guessing a belt or a pulley. Is there a common problem or maintenance item that should be addressed? Thanks |

Im not able to find OEM. I found the below. Also is this just simply a remove and replace? Any documents online for step by step directions? http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...ATK070701.html |

Every dealership has the belt in stock.

Pretty cool way of showing us the problem. Would be nice if everyone did that.
Regarding your issue, everyone that posted before me is right, sounds like your belt is just worn. All you have to do is replace it, good luck finding one. |

you may also wanna concider checking the belt tensioner. |
Re: 2003 Honda Accord I4 Squeling on Startup
Slightly off topic. How did you post the video? I have a startup noise that only happens after a cool/cold night. I fail at describing it. 08 accord, sounds a little like a leaf rake on concrete driveway, lasts 1 second at most. Want to capture on film and post it.

Take it back to the dealer and leave it for a day or two. They need to replace the VTC actuator. Which is the cam gear so it involves a good amount of tear down.

Re: 2003 Honda Accord I4 Squeling on Startup
heres what to do on the k series like yours and rsx, crv yadda yadda you all know.....first draw the schematic of the way the belt is or sometimes even aftermarket co. give you a diagram of how the belt should go.....anywho i always take off the passenger front tire for better access.... and push back on the tensioner remove belt.....put the new belt on according to the diagram i just made or the given one and then release tensioner....and there ya go.....the tensioner is an automatic tensioner...if you break it well then yea ya need a new one...just double check each pully to make sure everything is on before you start the engine. belts on these cars are so easy a monkey could do it

What? did you try the dealer? How many miles on your car, because you might want to consider changing the water pump and or tensioner at the same time
Any tips for changing the waterpump? Is it accessable enough from the top or is it easyer from the side (with wheel off) |

The car has 89k on it. Since the car has an external water pump I hear changing it is pretty straight forward. Are there any posts to changing the water puimp and tensioner on this forum? THANKS |
Re: 2003 Honda Accord I4 Squeling on Startup
Well, replaced my water pump last weekend and solved the issue for good it looks like!
First, drained the coolant (plug in bottom of rad, easy to get at but make sure you close it up after to prevent the coolant from draining out of your block when you take pump out) Draw a diagram of the belt path if you think it might help putting it back on. Take off the belt with a long wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt, clockwise pressure. Then counter clockwise to remove the bolt and pulley, but watch the back for the nut to fall out! (lost mine when I wasn’t expecting it) Move the power steering reservoir out of the way (don’t disconnect anything, just lift it strait up and out of the way) Now you can get the top 3 bolts easy off the waterpump, and the bottom 3 are easyer if you take the wheel off and get em from the bottom/side. I did nt remove the mud shield or anything. The pump comes out easy under the alternator and up through the front, but be ready for some coolant to leak out, don’t want to kill the dog. New one goes in just as easy, thread your top bolts in (loosely) so lining the bottom up is easier. Carefull with the bolts as I broke one when socket slipped. Don’t need too much pressure on them but important that it is equal pressure on all six. Put your pulley back on and tighten till the tensioner moves (not any tighter). Put the belt back on. (easier with 2 people, even your wife) Fill your radiator (it wont take it all yet) then run the engine for 5 minutes so the thermostat opens (run the heat too) and top it up the rest of the way. By the way, priced the pump out everywhere (re-builds too) and found it cheapest brand new at Honda. The belt was half of Hondas price at another place, but it pays to shop around! Good luck. |
Re: 2003 Honda Accord I4 Squeling on Startup
kkleine your procedure for the replacement is the same I read thru the honda manuals it appears
Just an FYI. I have scoured locally for oem vs aftermarkets parts and as long as you find a dealer willing to sell you at wholesale (i.e. you've done your homework we will sell the parts for a far price) you will find the dealers price for parts will be the same as aftermarket 2003 honda accord 4 cyl parts Water Pump 19200RAAA01 $87.50 Drive Belt 38920RAAA02 $25.25 Coupe Tensioner 31170RAAA02 $55.16 |
