2003 Accord LX 4 cyl squeaky brakes
Hello,
My front brakes started squeaking about 5,000 miles ago. It has gotten progressively louder and more persistent, but the performance hasn't decreased whatsoever. I can't be certain, but it sounds like the passenger side is squeaking a bit more. There is no grinding sound, and the squeaking isn't steady, rather, it makes a squeak once per rotation. My question:
How long can you ride on squeaky breaks without compromising your rotors? I just bought pads, but probably wont' get around to fixing them for a couple more weeks, maybe a total of 7,000 miles since squeaking began. Do you know if this might cuase my rotors to need replacing? I should note that 6,500 of those 7,000 miles are highway, and that the squeaking sound isn't intense yet.
I know this is a vague question with many variables, but any help would be appreciated. Also, how much might two rotors run me?
Thanks!
- Doug

Sounds like the wear indicator is rubbing on the rotor. The wear indicator is just a bent piece of thin metal on the brake pad that scrapes along the surface of the rotor to tell you that there is about a milimeter and a half of material left. If you wait too long you will run out of friction material and can ruin your rotors. BUT more importantly you will lose your braking performance and possibly crash and die, or worse you could kill someone else. Don't drive your car until you replace the pads OR at least inspect them to make sure you can actually go another couple of weeks without changing them.

You can ride forever or until your material(rotor and or pads) wear out... the resonance created by the pad vibrating in the caliper does not affect the stopping performance of your car at all... and if fact may have been created by the fact you may be to soft/gentle on your brakes when stopping causing some pad/rotor glazing that would add to this sound issue. drive away my friend.
now I have to note, that there are two types a sound... the typical squeal and a more aggressive grinding sound. if it is grinding then yes your pad material is gone... if it is a simple squeal, its nothing more than a nuisance
