05 accord v6 rough running and noise
trying to help a friend out with his car. 05 accord ex v6 with 70,000 miles. got a code for a cyl 5 misfire, car is running rough and hesitates when you rev it. coolant was low and there is a noise when the engine is hot. its an on and off ticking, doesnt sound like a rod knock and it seems a bit fast for valvetrain noise. can seem to isolate the noise to a specific area. once it gets hot there is a strong sulfur smell. no smoke out of the exhaust that i saw.
im quite mechanically inclined but not very familiar with hondas and the common isses. any ideas? thanks!

I worked at acura for 2 years. and ive seen alot of the v6 cylinder number 5 spark plug left loose and cause a ticking noise and misfire overtime. try to remove cylinder 5 coilpack. and try to remove sparkplug number. Had one that cracked in half.. other techs had to get the head sent out. really bad..
All that said and done if sparkplug wasnt loose and looks okay. try swaping cylinder 5 coilpack with cylinder 6 and see if it follow. let me know what you've found. thanks.

#5 coil is mangled, plug is busted to pieces and the spark plug tube is caked with junk. Hopefully the threads in the head are ok. The plug was very loose. I appreciate the help! Ill update when i get farther.

Wow. My 03 has 80k miles, and I've only taken two plugs out to check them. I guess I should check the rest of them, or change them a little early.

The stump of the plug thats left behind is totally unscrewed and wiggling, but isnt coming out of the hole. I have been walking him thru the process over the phone but i think im going to have to go over and yank the valve cover to get the rest of the plug out and to take a good look at the hole.

Plug hole is shot. Spark plug is loose in the hole and wiggling around but it wont come out or screw in. Ouch! Seems like a somewhat common issue, is honda gonna do anything except hand over a huge bill?

Take it to the dealer and see what they can do for him. Or bring the head to the machine shop. last tech that did one i believe honda warranty a new head. doubt dealer can do anything.

Middle cylinder on the radiator side is #5, correct? Dealer says thats not #5.
Edit: they changed their mind, its #5. electrode from plug is missing, as long as it dropped when the plug was removed and the piston is ok the repair will be $1,500 with the head getting repaired and all the plugs getting replaced. I told the cars owner to call honda and see if they will help.

Well the cylinder wall, piston top and head are all beat up. $3,500 for a used motor. I told them to ask honda about some goodwill assistance.

Re: 05 accord v6 rough running and noise
Dealer will put a used motor in for $1,900 now and after its fixed they will offer $6k on trade in. They say thats all its worth with a different motor and because its a coupe. I told them to take the $1,900 motor but dont even think of taking the $6k. Thats $4,100 as is. Its a really clean loaded black on black ex with leather. I offered $6,500 if they want it gone.
