I saw the post for the 03 Power Steering issue, but mine is a bit different.

I had a very noisy PS steering pump replaced about 5 - 8K miles ago. At that time the PS was kind of iffy when the car was idling or at very low RPM. PS is normal with RPM over say 1000RPM. There is no PS pump noise at this time.

The shop at the time of the PS pump replacement said something about "Hope the Rack and Pinion doesn't go next, that happens sometimes after a pump replacement." Is there any truth to that? Or should I be going to a new shop.

Anyway, mostly wanted to get thoughts on this issue and be prepared when I go to the shop.

The likely hood is very low. The premise is that when changing the pump you have to change the fluid, and with changing the fluid all the metal debris that was circulating in the system, giving it more viscosity or thickness, is now swapped out for fresh fluid with out the debris. With out the debris the fluid circulates much easier and now can sneak by worn ball bearings. At the end of the day though, you would probably notice issues with steering and normally if something where off in the rack you would know soon after. I think he was just trying to scare you more then anything, I wouldn’t worry.
