03 accord ex v6 120k P0420 problem
Hi guys,
I need a little help here from some tech heads.
In the past year, I've had off and on P0420 codes. (sometimes they clear themselves after shutting off the engine or after driving for a while). I replaced the o2 sensor (OEM) at the top rear of the engine, (I believe bank 1), as well as put on a used throttle body I found at a local yard. It has held up well for a few months, but now doing the same thing again.
I've noticed that when sometimes stepping on the gas pedal, there is a spot around 2000 rpm's where I get a dead spot and then a surge.
Sometimes when getting the check engine light, I also get a TCS light as well as the exclamation point light next to it, and it will continue to drive, but with a severe lack of acceleration or power and some bucking. I can pull over, shut off the key, and restart with only a check engine light and it will resume driving somewhat normal again.
I've read some other forums and some said it could be a cat, but it's not happening all the time and I'm thinking it has something to do with the throttle position sensor? Is the TPS inside of the throttle body, or is there another sensor I'm missing? Someone mentioned there might be a TPS mounted on the strut housing???
Also, another smaller question. I am due for a timing belt service, but the dealer quoted me $800 to do it. I know it's an interference motor, so what is the most you have seen out of an original timing belt. I'm already at 120k miles and the recommended service was at 105k.
Thanks in advance.

Well, first off... Get that timing belt done ASAP. That's just a bomb waiting to go off. And while $800 isn't cheap, it's much less then a new motor. You might be able to find a local shop that specializes in Honda cars. That'll save you a bit.
Who told you the TPS sensor is located on the Throttle body, not the strut tower. They might have confused that with the ABS Speed sensor? That's located at your axles in the front and rear.
I'm thinking that it might also be clogged injectors. have you replaced all the O2 sensors yet, or just one?

Yes, working on getting the funds to do the timing belt.
I only replaced the top rear engine o2 sensor since it was referenced as bank 1. The OEM's are not exactly cheap to replace, so what would be the next one to replace?

Once you replace the throttle body there should be a type of "idle air learn," not 100% on the procedure outlined by Honda though. As for the P0420 if your still getting this after o2 sensors your cats have failed. Common on Nissans. Catalyst in efficiency.
Especially when pumping 87 octane into a v6.
