New Owner 2018 Accord 2.0 Touring
 

This is the first Honda I have ever purchased. It has a lot of options that I really like - HUD, heated seats front and back, smart cruise control, lane keeping etc. It seems to drive well. There are two things that disappoint me. The first is not a major problem,but I am accustomed to a better visual display - that is the parking sensors. They are better than nothing, but I have seen more useful displays. The second item is almost a show stopper - it is so noisy on the highway that having a conversation is next to impossible. It is obviously my fault for not taking a more extended test drive. It supposedly has noise cancellation, but it is not very good. What sold me on this car was the safety features, but it has a very very noisy cabin. I will stick with it for 2-3 years, but it is an expensive lesson.

Has anyone that owns one of these looked into noise attenuation?

Congrats! I'm looking at the same car and noticed some noise as well. I think it lacks sound deadening and the tires are not quiet.

Mind if I ask you what you discount off MSRP you got? I'm finding prices all over the place

I traded a 2014 Tacoma and received $23k for it and gave them $11 k cash so I paid $34k if that helps.

Let me know if you find something that can reduce the noise in the cabin. The more I drive, the less I like the car.

Yeah, any sound deadening mat would help. Looking at the hood flutter under wind load tells me the metal is thin and likely little sound deadening applied to keep total weight down

I just drive one. Love the sound and the car. If I pull the trigger, I'm not changing anything other than better intercooler

If it was the engine I was hearing, I would not have a big problem. I don't mind the sound of an engine revving up. The problem I have is the intense road noise, wind noise and very high tire noise. It has a good audio system when you are sitting still. Once you start moving you might as well have a very cheap sound system because you can't hear it very well anyway.

I guess... Those are easily changed to compensate during ownership

Changing tires is a non-starter. The car comes with Michelin Primacy tires which are considered one of the 10 quietest tires you can buy. The problem is not the tires - the problem is Honda built a "luxury" car, but failed to build a "luxury" cabin. Even a low end Camry has a quieter cabin.

thin sheet metal and no sound deadening is the issue. The metal is sufficiently thin to allow some flutter in the hood at idle and at speed, visible from the driver's seat

Thank you PGT. I have two other vehicles. I expected the Honda to be noiser than my 2013 BMW 528 and it by far, but not my 2009 Altima. Road noise is actually louder in the Honda than in the old Altima. As I understand, Honda designed this Accord to try to stop the slide on sales of the sedan. What were they thinking not to pay attention to cabin noise environment - I don't know.

Some sound deadening mat in the front floor pans does wonders. Just depends on how easy it is to pull the carpet up. Inside the front and back doors as well.

If it really bugs you but you like the car, try visiting a local car audio shop to get some sound deadening installed. All you're really doing is adding mass to the thin metal to lower the Fs or resonant frequency. A combination of asphalt or butyl rubber sound material and a jute pad makes a huge difference.
