Just to add my 2 cents to this... there is/was a common problem called "hot soak restart". The TW sensor (not the one the temp gauge uses) gets flakey and signals the ECU that the engine is cold even though it's at/near operating temp. This results in flooding and no start.

I had a similar problem in my '74 VW Campmobile. Something about a hot-start relay.
But I just thought of something - It has had an auto to manual conversion? Does it have a clutch switch to prevent a start w/o pushing in the clutch, or has this been disconnected?
Those go bad sometimes - just a thought.
