Valves tapping bad on 96 Accord V6
 

My GF has owned her 96 Accord V6 for about 5 years now. I have done all of the maintence on it since we have had it. The valves tap really bad. She has around 175K I know they are hydraulic and fix themselves after it warms up. They didn't tap when we first got the car (78K miles) but when they started to, it would go away after a few minutes. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the noise would come and go even after it warmed up. When I would change the oil, it would help alot but just wondering why the valves keep taping even when its warm.

uhm when was the timing belt done?

first valve adjustment is either 60K (severe) or 120K miles (normal)

Have the valves adjusted, and check for oil in the spark plug tubing. If you see oil, then you probably should change your valve gasket. If you dont want to spend the 100$ to get the adjusted, just use heavier oil.

yup, needs a valve adjustment. since its a v6, i'd rather have the pro do this one.

You cannot adjust the valves on the C27 engines.

Just changed the plugs about 2 months ago, no traces of oil were found. I am using 10W40 right now. Don't wanna run anything much thicker.

Timing belt is fine. I changed it at 100K. I inspected the belt when I did a full tune-up on it. No cracks or wear and had the correct tension.

the most common problem and repairs made to the early v6 was installing new lifters. but make sure you soak the new one's in oil for 12 hours or more. it will make a huge difference if not it will take some time to build up the oil in the lifters. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emcocktl.gif

Thanks, your the only one who knows that you can't adjust them. I will look into getting new lifters but not looking foward to messing with it since there is NO ROOM in the bay https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

I have never worked on a V6 Accord. Could someone tell me why the exhaust side on the V6 has tappet adjusting screws. Are they only used in the initial cam install and then after that they self adjust? My manual doesn't go into great detail on how the system works. I'm just going buy the step-by-step for the cam install.

I see the hydraulic valve lash adjusters/lifters for the intake side. But nothing that looks self adjusting on the exhaust side. I mean it's f#@ked that you just tighten them up until they touch the valve. Then give them another 1 1/8th turn tighten them and your done. Sounds like your putting on an oil filter not setting a valve adjustment. Why have "adjusting screws" if there are no adjustments to be made or clearance values?

this is a weird system when i went to training years back on it i was stumped for a min but then the instructor made me see the way. it was a very short lived motor on the accord but it was used on the first gen legends.
the adjuster on the exhaust side is to preload on the rocker arm and the push rod it's the way that system was put to work. it don't make any sense why the domestic auto's us a similar system and no adjusting involved.

It's feasible.. The 5th gen v6 shares the same front and side mounts as the 1st gen 3.0cL. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

So thats the only swap that would be able to drop in? Whats the engine code on that motor?

1st gen CL used the J30 for the V6 variety.

Searching for cam timing marks on here and found this dead thread and lol'd.

C27: Valves ARE adjustable. Looking at them now. HAS lifters and pushrods and is an OHC engine. Just put the head back together a half hour ago, and looking at it now.

Oil won't get into the spark plug tubes on this engine. On the four cylinder, oil gets into the spark plug tubes because of bad rocker orings. Don't give bad advice. If you don't know what you are talking about, please don't comment.
