Default Transmission Fluid Change/Filter??

THANK YOU for your TIME>

Hey.... I have 1998 Honda Accord 2DR Coupe 4 Cylinder 2.3L Automatic Transmission...

I want to change out the transmission fluid for regular maint. on my Honda. From what I understand you can have a dealership "flush" the transmission which totally empties the transmisson AND torque converter...and they/you fill it with all new fluid.

For the rest of us home mechanics we have to do the whole......drain and fill 3-4 times to "cycle" out all the fluid from the transmission AND torque converter...since every time you drain and fill this way it only drains out whats in the transmission....maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of the TOTAL transmission fluid.

So here is the question....

My manual says for my auto transmission..it takes a TOTAL of 2.6 QUARTS.....thats 2 little bottles right? That seems like such a small amount of fluid?

So if you have to do the home mechanic route of draining and filling...heres the question.....when you drain the fluid....how do you know how much to put back in? Put the plug back in.....lower the car and while checking the dipstick...add fluid???

Just seems alittle funny since you dont totally "drain" the entire system...so you dont know [unless you measure] how much ATF you drain out and approx. how much fluid is left in the system?...right?....and you have to FILL ATF in the dipstick hole...and measure it at the same time... ALL while keeping the fluid and engine/tranny temps near operating temps to aid in draining and such...

yes...i bet this sounds alittle crazy... any help or insight?

there is no "user serviceable" filter on honda automatic transmissions. There is a filter but you gonna have to disassemble the transmission to get to it.

Can't change the filter (as was said), and 2.6 qts is 3 little bottles not 2. Put in about 2.5, and then add more while checking the dipstick.

make sure you drive the car and let it warm up before you check the fluid. always check it when it is warmed up
