Hello,

I need some education. Youtube not helping

The axel nut has a notch/punched into the grove of the axel. This keeps the axel nut from coming loose.

What tool can I buy to help me get this notch reversed so I can take out the nut from the axel? I hope I make sense.

Is it called a drift pin? Im not having much luck using a screwdriver.

I've always just used a screw driver....not my good ones

I guess a chisel of the right size would work as well, you only need to move the part that is "folded" in a bit. From there it is then ~190 ft lbs of force to get the nut off.

Thank you poorman. I thought there was a tool specific for this function...guess I will have to dedicate a beat up screwdriver..

I tried looking for a flat head chisel but not having much luck..

If you can't find a screw driver to abuse, you can use a nail or any other steel pointed object. Center punch will work as well, just be careful and watch the progress that you are making, not that you will hurt anything, maybe the tool.

Yea, over the years I've turned tools into something else....just like this. I have old screw drivers that I keep around just so I can beat on them. Then I have another set of which I WILL NOT beat on,

Again, you just need something that will fit the widest part of the slit in the axle.....drive it in at an angle and push out the "folded" part....it is at the end of the threads so you don't need much.

Honestly the hardest part is the 190~220 ft lbs it will take to get the nut moving....if you have enough you really don't even need to worry with the "fold".....torque will take care of that

Small or medium masonry cold chisel is the best for staking and unstaking an axle nut. Don't use a wood chisel as the steel used is not made for metal on metal and can shatter shards. Usually use the med or large to stake and the small one to slide in the groove and unstake.

MadMike, the chisel in the picture, it has a sharp end. Does this not destroy the axel nut when I put it back on? Should I be purchasing a new axel nut and not reusing the previous unit?

had same issue, seemed screw driver just wouldn't do it and managed to break tip off in the threads. bought a steel chisel and it worked after pushing the broken tip in even deeper. 3 breaker bars, 2 screw drivers any many socket extensions later the nut came off.

Not if it is unstaked evenly, axle nuts should be replaced every time, but I have reused them after doing a minor repair that required the axle nut to be removed.
Yup. Ideally every-time the nut is removed it should be replaced. However, with older/worn wheel bearings the nut usually does not line back up to where it was staked before and the nut can be staked again on a fresh piece of the flange.

You don't need to undo the stake on the honda nuts it will not stop the nut coming off when you are using a breaker bar and it will unstake itself once you start turning it
