Default Timing Belt Maintenance

I have a 2000 4cyl with 104k miles. At this service interval, Honda recommends: "Replace the timing belt and balancer belt (4 cylinder models only). Inspect the water pump."

How extensive of maintenance do I need to perform? Should I just replace the belts and valve cover gasket? Do I also need to replace the water pump? Do I need to replace the pulleys and tensioner springs?

Also, when should the spark plugs be replaced?

Replace the waterpump. It's good preventative maintenance. You will have to remove the belts to get to it again anyway. Do it now for peace of mind. As for the tensioner pulleys, replace those as well. You can purchase a timing belt kit that comes with new tensioner pulleys and the two required belts. I have used Gates brand without doubt on several cars, usually purchased through the local chain store. Just look for pricing. I found the local ORLY has better pricing on the belts than the online places. As for the springs themselves, unless they are stretched out or broken, are used to apply correct tension prior to locking down the tensioner pulleys. They should not be stretched or in use. They are basically a third hand to help you properly set the timing belts.

Your owners manual should spec when the sparkplugs need to be replaced,

i can't remember if it says it in the book, but i wouldn't think of doing a timing belt and waterpump without also replacing cam, crank and both balance shaft seals. if they aren't leaking at 104k you can count on them leaking before the next timing belt interval around 200k.

most kits come with them anyway, just wanted to through that out there.

I have looked at various kits (there are a few variations on the depth of parts offered) and also discussions about going OEM vs. after-market. So I'm thinking I'll stick with OEM and get the most extensive kit and if I don't replace all the seals, I can use the parts later. This kit ( http://www.timingbeltkit.com/servlet...-timing/Detail )seems to be the most comprehensive, though it is not OEM. Does anyone know of a retailer that has a decently priced OEM kit that is similar?
